Chapter 6 - The Shadow in the Financial District

The morning sun over downtown Chicago cut through the autumn chill, casting long, sharp shadows across the glass facade of the Moretti Holdings tower.
Up on the forty-second floor, the executive suite was humming with a tense, razor-sharp energy.
Marcus Vance stood beside the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, tapping a sleek titanium tablet that displayed real-time financial tracking algorithms.
"We’ve hit every primary node linked to Victor Vance’s offshore accounts," Marcus reported without turning around. "The federal prosecutors received the physical ledger files twenty minutes ago via courier. Warrants for corporate fraud and racketeering are being signed as we speak."
Dante Moretti sat behind his colossal mahogany desk, his fingers steepled together beneath his chin.
His face was carved from absolute focus, but beneath the cold corporate exterior, a subtle restlessness lingered—a rare vulnerability tied entirely to the private room at St. Jude’s Hospital.
"Did Victor realize the trap before the warrants cleared?" Dante asked, his voice low and steady.
"No," Marcus replied, looking over his shoulder. "He thinks he’s still playing a high-stakes chess match against our legal team. He’s currently holding an emergency board meeting at a secondary shell office on Michigan Avenue, trying to liquidate whatever remaining assets Sterling & Cross has left in the city."
Dante stood up, adjusting the cuffs of his immaculate white shirt before sliding into his tailored jacket.
"Then it’s time to end the game," Dante said coldly. "Prepare the detail. We’re paying our former employee a personal visit."
Before Marcus could respond, the secure intercom on Dante’s desk buzzed with a soft, priority-override chime.
Dante pressed the speaker key instantly.
"Report," he ordered.
"Mr. Moretti," the voice of his head medical monitor from St. Jude’s came through, sounding slightly strained. "We have an unexpected development at the private wing."
Dante’s body went completely rigid. "Explain."
"Miss Vance discharged herself against medical advice ten minutes ago," the nurse answered quickly. "She bypassed security protocols using an administrative master override code, put on her spare clothes, and left a note stating that if we're hunting Victor Vance, her administrative expertise is required in the field."
Dante’s eyes flared with a lethal combination of fury and grudging admiration.
"Harper," he muttered under his breath, the word carrying both a curse and a quiet vow.
May you like
"Shall we intercept her vehicle and bring her back to the wing, boss?" Marcus asked, his hand dropping automatically toward his holster.
"No," Dante replied, turning toward the private elevator with long, purposeful strides. "If Harper Vance wants to walk back into the war zone she helped uncover, she does it right by my side."
