Chapter 4 - The Attorney's Ultimatum and the Hidden Hatch

The air inside the private study instantly grew thick with palpable danger as Julian Vance closed the heavy oak door behind him with a soft, ominous click.
The polished lawyer did not look panicked; instead, his eyes burned with a cold, calculated fury that terrified Claire far more than any overt threat.
“You shouldn't have been listening at keyholes, Miss Bennett,” Julian said softly, his voice silky and smooth as he walked slowly toward the mahogany desk.
“Curiosity is a notoriously fatal flaw for medical professionals who don't know how to mind their own business.”
Claire stood up slowly from her chair, putting herself between Julian and the frail, trembling patriarch in the armchair.
“You've kept your own sister locked in a dark room for thirty years just to protect your inheritance and cover up your own attempted murder?” Claire demanded, her voice shaking with righteous anger.
Julian let out a cold, humorless laugh, shaking his head slightly as if speaking to an ignorant child.
“Murder? Such an ugly, melodramatic word, Miss Bennett,” Julian replied smoothly, adjusting the cuffs of his expensive silk shirt.
“Elena was a reckless, unstable addict who destroyed innocent lives on that bridge. What my family did was an act of profound mercy—and necessary preservation.”
Thomas raised his trembling wooden cane, pointing its silver tip directly at his eldest son with sudden, fierce authority.
“You didn't do it to protect the family, Julian,” Thomas rasped, his voice echoing sharply off the book-lined walls.
“You did it to steal my entire fortune, push me aside, and erase every rightful heir so you could liquidate the estate for your own offshore accounts.”
Julian's polite mask slipped for a split second, revealing a flash of genuine, venomous malice.
“You built this empire on ruthless ambition, Father—you taught me everything I know,” Julian sneered.
“And now, your pathetic guilt is putting everything we built at risk. Fortunately, this legal consultation today was specifically designed to finalize your complete mental incompetence declaration.”
Julian pulled a thick legal document from his leather portfolio and tossed it carelessly onto the mahogany desk.
“Once you sign this final medical-legal waiver, Father, you will be legally transferred to a private psychiatric facility in Switzerland tonight. No visitors, no phone calls, and certainly no interfering caregivers.”
Claire looked down at the document and then glared at the lawyer.
“I'm calling the police right now,” Claire declared, reaching instinctively for her cell phone in her pocket.
Before her fingers could wrap around the device, Julian moved with shocking, violent speed.
He lunged across the desk, grabbing Claire by the wrist with crushing force and wrenching her arm upward while simultaneously using his shoulder to slam her against the nearest bookshelf.
Heavy leather-bound books tumbled from the shelves, crashing onto the hardwood floor with a deafening clatter.
“You aren't calling anyone, Miss Bennett,” Julian hissed directly into her face, his grip bruising her skin.
“The local police department is on a long-term retainer with the Whitmore Foundation. Any emergency call originating from this estate gets automatically routed directly to my private desk.”
Thomas tried desperately to stand up from his armchair, lifting his heavy wooden cane, but his frail legs betrayed him, and he collapsed back into the cushions with a gasping groan.
“Leave her alone, Julian!” Thomas yelled weakly.
“She has nothing to do with this!”
Julian released Claire's wrist with a sharp shove that sent her stumbling backward against the edge of the desk.
He sneered down at her, rubbing his hands together with calm composure as if he had merely swatted an annoying fly.
“You are trapped inside a fortress with no outside communication, Miss Bennett, and no one in this city cares enough to look twice at the Whitmore estate,” Julian stated flatly.
“You have two choices: take your final paycheck from Mrs. Dalton this very afternoon, sign a strict legal non-disclosure agreement, and walk out those front doors forever—or join Elena behind that locked door permanently.”
Claire clutched her bruised wrist, her mind racing desperately for an escape route.
She knew that taking the severance check meant abandoning both Thomas and the imprisoned woman to a grim, invisible fate; yet fighting back without communication tools seemed suicidal against a man with Julian's deep corruption and physical dominance.
“I'll take my things,” Claire said quietly, lowering her gaze to project a false sense of total defeat.
Julian smiled triumphantly, clearly believing he had completely broken her spirit.
“A wise and pragmatic decision, Miss Bennett,” Julian praised smoothly, walking toward the study door.
“Mrs. Dalton will escort you off the property by five o'clock. Don't bother trying to wander through the eastern corridor again—the security guards arrive in twenty minutes.”
With a final arrogant smirk, Julian pulled open the heavy study door and strode out of the room, locking the deadbolt from the outside with a loud, distinct click.
Claire stood frozen in the center of the silent study, listening to the heavy thud of Julian's footsteps receding down the hallway.
She looked over at Thomas, who was slumped in his chair, staring at the floor with eyes full of absolute defeat.
“I'm sorry, Claire,” the old man whispered brokenly.
“I dragged you into a nightmare.”
“We aren't dead yet, Mr. Whitmore,” Claire whispered fiercely, kneeling beside his chair and grabbing his cold, frail hand.
“You said Julian locked her away thirty years ago... but there has to be another way into that room. A service hatch, a hidden utility shaft, or an old architectural blueprint.”
Thomas blinked slowly, a faint glimmer of hope sparking within his tired eyes.
“The original nineteenth-century blueprints... they're stored in the basement archives behind the old wine cellar,” Thomas murmured.
“There's a secondary dumbwaiter shaft that connects the basement straight up to the eastern wing service pantry.”
Claire stood up instantly, her professional instincts fully replaced by survival determination.
“Stay here, Mr. Whitmore. Lock this door behind me if you can, and don't open it for anyone except me.”
Before the old man could protest, Claire slipped silently out of the study through the adjoining private balcony door that connected to the exterior second-floor stone ledge, bypassing Julian's locked barrier entirely.
She crept stealthily along the narrow stone balustrade, ducking beneath the high arched windows until she reached the deserted service staircase leading down to the dark, damp stone basement.
The basement smelled heavily of aged wine, dust, and damp earth.
Cobwebs hung thick from the low stone ceilings, and the only illumination came from a single flickering overhead incandescent bulb.
Claire navigated her way quickly past rows of empty wooden wine racks until she reached the back corner of the cellar, where an old iron lever was embedded into the stone wall.
With a hard yank, a heavy iron panel swung open silently, revealing a narrow, dark brick-lined vertical service shaft that hadn't been touched in decades.
Peering upward into the pitch-black vertical tunnel, Claire could faintly hear the distant sound of someone weeping.
May you like
It was coming from directly above.
She took a deep, steadying breath, grabbed the rusted metal rungs built into the brick wall, and began climbing upward into the suffocating darkness of the Whitmore estate's deepest secret.
