Chapter 5 - The Underground Blueprint and the Rescue Plan

The rusted metal rungs bit cruelly into the palms of Claire's hands as she climbed higher into the vertical brick shaft, the air growing progressively colder, dustier, and harder to breathe.

Every muscle in her arms screamed in protest, but the memory of Thomas's broken expression and the haunting cries of the woman locked behind the deadbolt fueled her climbing speed.

After what felt like an eternity of agonizing upward scaling, Claire's outstretched fingers brushed against a horizontal wooden panel set into the brick wall.

She pressed her shoulder against the wood and gave it a sharp shove.

With a dry, splintering crack, the hidden panel swung open outward, spilling a dim shaft of dust-mote-filled light into the cramped tunnel.

Claire pulled herself through the narrow opening, tumbling headfirst onto a cold, carpeted floor.

She coughed softly, brushing thick gray dust from her clothes, and looked around her new surroundings.

She was standing inside a small, hidden utility pantry adjacent to the eastern wing corridor—completely cut off from the main house, yet directly connected to the forbidden room.

Through the open service hatch on the wall, she could see a heavy secondary iron grille bolted securely over the inner opening, preventing anyone inside the room from escaping through the dumbwaiter shaft.

Stepping cautiously out of the pantry, Claire found herself standing in the narrow, shadowed hallway just inches away from the dreaded oak door with its gleaming silver deadbolt.

She approached the door slowly, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird.

“Hello?” Claire whispered into the quiet space, pressing her mouth close to the grain of the wood.

“Is anyone in there?”

Instantly, the faint rustling sounds inside stopped.

A hesitant, trembling breath sighed against the other side of the barrier.

“Who... who is out there?” a woman's voice rasped, sounding painfully weak, raspy, and fragile, like dry autumn leaves scraping across pavement.

“My name is Claire,” she replied softly, keeping her voice low to ensure no passing guards could overhear.

“I'm your father's new caregiver. Your father... Thomas told me everything about what Julian did to you.”

A long, choked sob echoed from behind the locked door.

“My father... is he still alive?” the woman whispered, her voice breaking with decades of accumulated grief.

“Yes, he's alive, but Julian is trying to force him into a psychiatric facility today so he can steal the entire estate,” Claire explained urgently.

“We need to get you out of here, but I need to know how to open this deadbolt from the outside without a key.”

“There is no key... Julian threw it down the incinerator thirty years ago,” the woman replied, her voice filled with hopeless despair.

“The deadbolt can only be unlocked from the master control panel inside Julian's private home office on the third floor.”

Claire swore under her breath, realizing the immense danger of the task ahead.

“Julian's office?”

“Inside his antique mahogany desk... there's a hidden wall safe containing the master override key for every smart lock in this entire mansion,” the woman whispered rapidly as sudden footsteps echoed faintly from the far end of the eastern corridor.

“Hurry! Julian's security guards are starting their evening patrol early!”

Claire didn't hesitate.

She turned on her heel and sprinted silently back down the dim hallway, avoiding the main staircases and utilizing the narrow service passages she had mapped out during her exploration.

Her mind raced with calculated precision.

She needed to reach Julian's third-floor office, crack the wall safe, retrieve the master override key, unlock the eastern room, and somehow get both Thomas and Elena out of the mansion before Julian returned to finalize his malicious coup.

As she reached the base of the third-floor private stairs, she spotted two uniformed private security guards standing near the double doors of Julian's office, casually smoking and chatting.

Claire ducked behind a tall marble pillar, her heart hammering wildly against her chest.

Direct confrontation was impossible; she needed a brilliant distraction—and she needed it immediately.

Spying a heavy bronze vase filled with decorative river stones sitting on a nearby mahogany console table, Claire formed a daring, high-risk plan.

She picked up a heavy handful of the smooth stones and hurled them with all her might down the opposite end of the empty west-wing hallway.

CRASH!

The stones struck a decorative antique suit of armor, sending pieces of metal clattering loudly across the hardwood floor with a tremendous racket.

The two security guards spun around instantly, their faces locking into alarmed expressions.

“What the hell was that?” one guard barked, drawing a flashlight as they both sprinted down the west wing to investigate the disturbance.

Claire burst from behind the marble pillar like a sprinter leaving the starting blocks.
