Chapter 11 - A New Dawn Behind the Iron Gates

Spring arrived six months later, washing the Gallo estate in vibrant hues of emerald green and blooming cherry blossoms. The heavy iron gates opened, but today, they welcomed a different kind of visitor. In the sunlit courtyard near the grand fountain, a young boy with a full head of curly brown hair and bright, laughing eyes chased a soccer ball across the manicured lawn. Keo Vance was cancer-free. The experimental protocol, funded by Dominic’s ruthless intervention and carried out by the best medical minds money could buy, had driven the leukemia into complete remission. Dr. Evans stood near the patio with a clipboard, watching the boy run with a wide smile on his face. Linda sat at a wrought-iron table nearby, sipping a cup of chamomile tea, wearing a soft summer dress instead of her severe gray domestic uniform. Her face was radiant, the purple shadows and hollow exhaustion completely gone, replaced by a deep, glowing peace. Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel pathway. Dominic approached, wearing an open-collared linen shirt and sunglasses, looking less like a feared mob kingpin and more like a man finally at ease in his own home. He stopped beside Linda’s table, watching Keo kick the soccer ball against an oak tree and cheer loudly. “He’s putting on weight,” Dominic noted quietly, a rare, genuine smile touching the corners of his mouth. “The doctor said his blood counts are better than mine,” Linda replied, looking up at him with eyes full of profound gratitude and a quiet, undeniable warmth. “We’re discharging him from the medical wing tomorrow, Dominic. We found an apartment near the park. I... I wanted to thank you. For everything.” Dominic pulled out the chair opposite her and sat down, resting his forearms on the table. He looked at her, really looked at her, realizing with a jolt that in the months she had lived in his fortress, she had become an indispensable part of his world—not as a servant, but as an equal. “An apartment?” Dominic raised an eyebrow. “In this city? Rent is astronomical in the park district.” Linda smiled, a playful spark dancing in her brown eyes. “Well, I managed to save a little money. And my new employer pays extremely well.” Dominic chuckled low in his throat, leaning back in his chair. “Your employer is a stubborn, demanding man who refuses to let you leave his property.” He reached across the table, his warm, strong fingers gently covering her trembling hand—though this time, her hand wasn’t shaking from fear or exhaustion, but from the quiet thrill of a new beginning. “You and Keo aren't going anywhere, Linda. Unless, of course, you’re tired of living with a mob boss.” Linda squeezed his hand back, her smile radiant against the morning sun. “I think,” she whispered softly, “I’m finally right where I belong.”
