Chapter 9 - Sanctuary Behind Iron Gates

The heavy iron gates of the Gallo estate swung open automatically as the armored transport van approached, swallowing the vehicle into the sprawling, heavily fortified compound. To anyone from the outside, the estate looked like a pristine Italian Renaissance villa surrounded by manicured gardens and ancient oak trees. To those in the underworld, it was an impenetrable fortress guarded by perimeter sensors, thermal cameras, and fifty heavily armed professionals. The van pulled directly into the private underground medical annex—a state-of-the-art facility Dominic had secretly built years ago to treat wounded capos without drawing federal attention from public hospitals. As the doors slid open, a team of top-tier civilian doctors and specialized pediatric nurses, hastily recruited and generously paid, rushed forward to wheel Keo’s mobile ICU bed into a pristine, sterile recovery suite. Linda stepped out of the van, her legs trembling slightly from the sheer emotional exhaustion of the past twenty-four hours. She watched as doctors hooked Keo up to advanced monitoring equipment, adjusting the intravenous infusion lines for Protocol 4-B with flawless precision. Dr. Evans, who had agreed to relocate to the estate’s private facility under heavy salary and armed protection, walked over to Linda with a reassuring nod. “He’s stable, Linda. The transport didn’t disrupt the IV line at all. He’s resting comfortably, and our equipment here is actually more advanced than what we had at St. Jude’s.” Linda closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath of pure relief. She felt a gentle hand guide her toward an adjacent private resting suite attached to the medical wing—a room furnished with plush velvet armchairs, a warm fireplace, and a king-sized bed covered in silk sheets. “You need to sleep,” a deep, commanding voice said from the doorway. Dominic stood leaning against the doorframe, his suit jacket removed, his white dress shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms. He looked tired, the hard lines of his face softened by the warm glow of the room’s lamps. “I can’t sleep,” Linda murmured, shaking her head. “I have to watch him. I have to make sure—” “Dr. Evans and his team are watching him every second,” Dominic interrupted gently, stepping into the room. He motioned toward a tray of hot food and tea resting on a mahogany table. “Eat something. Then sleep. You’re no good to your son if you collapse from exhaustion.” Linda looked at him, the terrifying mob boss who commanded fear across the entire eastern seaboard, now standing in a medical wing making sure she had dinner. The cognitive dissonance was staggering. “What happens now?” Linda asked softly, wrapping her arms around herself. “What happens to Salvatore Moretti? What happens to us?” Dominic walked over to the tall glass window overlooking the estate’s secure gardens, staring out into the dark night. “Moretti made a fatal mistake,” Dominic said, his voice dropping into a cold, lethal register. “He brought violence to a children’s hospital and tried to touch what belongs to my house. By sunrise tomorrow, the Moretti family will no longer exist as a threat in this city. Their territories will be absorbed, their assets frozen, and their leadership permanently retired.” He turned back to face her, his slate-gray eyes softening as they locked onto hers. “As for you and Keo, you are safe here. No one will ever touch you again. You can stay as long as it takes for him to beat this. Consider this estate your home.” Linda felt a tear slip down her cheek, but this time, it wasn’t from despair. It was the overwhelming realization that, in the darkest corner of the underworld, she had found an unexpected and unbreakable shield.
