Chapter 4 - A Dangerous Shadow at the Hospital Gates

While Linda rushed across the city with the manila envelope pressed against her heart, securing Keo’s immediate enrollment in St. Jude’s experimental trial, a much darker storm was brewing in the underworld. Word travels fast in a city divided by rival syndicates. The Moretti family—Dominic Gallo’s fiercest and most ruthless adversaries—had been watching Dominic’s movements with hawk-like intensity. For months, rumors had circulated that Dominic was expanding his operations into downtown real estate, threatening the Moretti narcotics and extortion rings. When Dominic’s ordinary black sedan was spotted parked outside an impoverished South Side public hospital, the Moretti intelligence network went into overdrive. Salvatore Moretti, an aging, paranoid capo with a penchant for extreme violence, sat in the back of a bulletproof Cadillac parked two blocks away from St. Jude’s County General. He tapped a gold-plated lighter against his knee while staring at grainy surveillance photos handed to him by his top enforcer, Frankie ‘The Knife’ Scalise. “Let me get this straight, Frankie,” Salvatore rasped, his voice sounding like grinding gravel. “Gallo—the cold-blooded executioner who wiped out the dock union leaders without blinking an eye—spent two hours pacing around a pediatric cancer ward?” Frankie nodded, adjusting his collar. “Verified by two of our guys inside, Boss. Gallo walked right up to Room 412. Talked to some nurse, watched a little kid through the door, and then dropped an envelope stuffed with eighty grand at the front desk before vanishing.” Salvatore’s eyes narrowed into slits of malicious calculation. For years, the underworld operated on a strict code: absolute detachment, zero vulnerabilities, no emotional attachments. If a mob boss developed a soft spot—a weakness—it became an open invitation for execution. “A kid,” Salvatore muttered, a wicked grin spreading across his weathered face. “Gallo is playing white knight for a cleaning lady’s brat. He thinks he can hide his human side behind concrete walls and armored SUVs.” “What do you want to do, Sal?” Frankie asked, leaning forward eagerly. “Do we hit the kid? Send a message straight to Gallo’s heart?” Salvatore raised a hand, stopping his enforcer. “No, you idiot. Killing a dying kid in a public hospital brings too much federal heat down on everyone. The feds would tear our operations apart looking for the culprits. We don't touch the kid—yet.” A sinister plan began forming in the old mobster’s mind. “Instead, we use the mother. If Gallo cares enough about this domestic worker to drop a small fortune on her kid's medical bills, then she is the ultimate leverage. We kidnap her right out from under his nose, prove to the entire syndicate that Dominic Gallo has gone soft, and force him to sign over the North Dock shipping lanes to us, or watch his little pet project bleed out on a cold operating table.” Frankie grinned, his eyes gleaming with sadistic anticipation. “Consider it done, Boss. We’ll snatch her the moment she steps out of that hospital.” Unbeknownst to them, Dominic Gallo’s paranoia was legendary. While Salvatore plotted his kidnapping scheme, Dominic had already deployed his own elite counter-surveillance team to monitor Linda’s safety, setting the stage for an explosive, high-stakes confrontation.
