Chapter 10 - The Trap Closes

The black SUV tore through the winding wooded roads outside the city, its headlights cutting jagged tunnels through the dense fog. In the passenger seat, Gunther sat in absolute, terrifying silence, his knuckles white as he gripped his weapon. In the back, Victor monitored the live GPS tracking signal pulsing from Mrs. Gable’s encrypted burner phone.
“She’s heading toward the old industrial shipping yards by the river,” Victor reported, his eyes glued to the screen. “The same docks where the union delegates were pushing back on the port expansion last week.”
Gunther’s eyes narrowed. Everything clicked into place with brutal, undeniable clarity. The port expansion, the union strikes, Jacqueline’s staged attack, and the unlocked master suite. It was all part of a coordinated coup orchestrated by a rival syndicate trying to destabilize his empire from within.
“She wasn't just selling us out,” Gunther said quietly. “She was clearing the house so an assassination team could walk right into my bedroom while I slept.”
Victor glanced sideways at his boss. “And Kayla walked right into the middle of it. If she hadn't collapsed on that bed, an assassin would have been waiting in the dark for you instead of a tired maid.”
Gunther didn't answer. A cold, suffocating knot tightened in his chest at the thought of what could have happened. If Kayla hadn't been there...
“We’re approaching the coordinates,” Victor announced, cutting the headlights as the SUV coasted smoothly down an unpaved gravel road toward a sprawling, rusted warehouse overlooking the dark waters of the river.
The building was dark, save for a single flickering overhead light casting long, skeletal shadows across the corrugated metal walls. Parked near the rusted loading bay was Mrs. Gable’s gray sedan, doors unlocked and empty.
“Victor, take the rear exit. If anyone tries to run, cut them off,” Gunther ordered, opening the passenger door with barely a sound.
“Be careful, Gabe,” Victor warned. “It’s a trap.”
Gunther stepped out into the cold night air, his boots crunching softly on the gravel. He didn't feel fear. He felt only a cold, burning focus. He moved toward the side entrance of the warehouse like a shadow, slipping through a cracked metal door into the cavernous interior.
Inside, the air smelled of stale oil, river silt, and cheap cigarette smoke.
From the shadows of a raised metal catwalk, low voices drifted down.
“...you promised my son would be safe!” Mrs. Gable’s voice echoed, trembling with absolute terror. “I gave you the master key code! I led the girl up there! What more do you want?!”
A harsh, gravelly laugh answered her from the darkness. “You gave us a maid instead of a corpse, Elena. Gunther didn't even sleep in the bed—he found her and changed his routine. Because of your incompetence, our window is closed.”

Gunther stepped out from behind a stack of wooden crates, raising his weapon with absolute, terrifying precision.
“The window is closed permanently,” Gunther’s voice rang out through the vast warehouse, echoing off the metal walls.
