Chapter 12 - Dawn Over the Estate

The first rays of golden sunlight broke over the wooded hills outside the city, painting the sprawling stone facade of the Woods estate in a warm, amber glow. Inside the master suite, the air was quiet, smelling faintly of cedar, bergamot, and fresh laundry detergent.
Kayla stood by the large bay window, holding a steaming cup of black coffee as she looked out over the manicured gardens. Her uniform was gone, replaced by a simple, elegant navy blouse and tailored slacks that fit her new position as executive household coordinator.
The heavy oak door opened softly, and Gunther stepped inside. He had changed out of his blood-stained suit into a crisp white shirt, the top buttons undone, his dark hair slightly messy from the long night. He looked tired, but the heavy, crushing weight that had defined his existence for a decade seemed to have lifted from his shoulders.
“The transport is gone,” Gunther said quietly, walking over to stand a few feet away from her by the glass. “Elena and her son are halfway across the Atlantic. They’re safe.”
Kayla turned her head, looking up at him with a soft, genuine smile that reached her eyes. “Thank you, Gunther. For her son, and... for everything else.”
“You don't need to thank me,” Gunther replied, leaning against the window frame beside her. “You saved my life two nights ago. Without even knowing it.”
“I was just tired,” Kayla laughed softly, taking a sip of her coffee. “I didn't mean to become a bodyguard.”
“Life doesn't care about what you mean to do,” Gunther said, his gaze softening as he looked down at her. “It only cares about what you choose to do when the walls come down.”
He reached out slowly, his fingers brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear—a gesture so gentle, so entirely out of character for the city’s most feared mob boss, that Kayla’s breath caught in her throat.
“I spent my whole life building walls to keep everyone out,” Gunther murmured, his voice dropping to a tender register. “I thought love and connection were liabilities I couldn't afford.”
“And now?” Kayla asked softly, her heart hammering against her ribs.
Gunther smiled—a real, complete smile that transformed his sharp features entirely. He reached out, gently taking the coffee cup from her hand and setting it down on the windowsill, before wrapping his arms securely around her waist, pulling her close against his chest.

“Now,” Gunther whispered against her hair as the morning sun flooded the room with golden light, “I think I finally found a liability I’m willing to keep.”
Kayla wrapped her arms around his neck, closing her eyes as the cold silence of the sprawling estate melted away forever into the warmth of a brand-new dawn.
