Chapter 8 - The Shadows Converge

The heavy silence of the drawing room returned like a physical weight once the sliding glass doors were locked and bolted shut. Gunther stood by the fireplace, staring down into the unlit hearth, his expression dark and unreadable. Victor paced back and forth across the Persian rug, his boots clicking rhythmically against the floorboards.

“That was too close, Gabe,” Victor said, stopping and turning to face his boss. “If she had dropped that lighter a second earlier, the whole west wall would have gone up. We need to tighten the perimeter guards. Double the shifts.”

“No,” Gunther said quietly, shaking his head. “Increasing guards won't solve the real problem.”

“What real problem?” Victor asked, throwing his hands up in frustration. “The woman was unstable!”

“Jacqueline didn't find this house on her own,” Gunther stated, finally looking up. His dark eyes flicked across the room toward Kayla, who was quietly standing by the doorway, still holding her manila folder. “She didn't know the rear cliffside trail. That path hasn't been used since the estate was renovated five years ago. Only someone with access to the original architectural blueprints could have led her up that way.”

Victor stopped pacing, his face draining of color. “Are you saying there’s a leak? Inside the inner circle?”

“I’m saying someone on our payroll sold us out to a rival faction, and Jacqueline was just the weapon they pointed at my front door,” Gunther replied, his voice dropping into a chilling whisper. “Victor, pull the financial records of every head of security, every logistics manager, and every senior staff member over the last six months. Look for sudden, unexplained cash deposits.”

“On it,” Victor muttered, his demeanor turning instantly grim. He shot one last wary glance at Kayla before turning on his heel and striding out of the room, slamming the heavy oak door behind him.

The room grew very quiet. Gunther turned his attention back to Kayla, who had not moved from her spot near the door. He walked slowly toward her, his footsteps entirely silent on the thick carpet.

“You handled yourself well out there,” Gunther said, stopping a few feet away from her. “Most people would have panicked.”

“I’ve had to handle difficult people before, Mr. Woods,” Kayla replied softly, clutching the folder tighter. “Living in this city teaches you how to read a room before it explodes.”

“You can drop the 'Mr. Woods' when it’s just the two of us,” Gunther said, a faint, almost imperceptible shadow of a smile touching the corner of his lips. “Call me Gunther.”

Kayla looked up, her heart skipping a strange, unexpected beat. “I don't think that’s protocol, Gunther.”

“Protocol in this house changed the moment you fell asleep in my bed,” he replied, stepping closer until she could feel the faint warmth radiating from his frame. “Which brings me to another question. How did you get past the biometric lock on the master suite door? That code is restricted to me and Victor.”

Kayla’s eyes widened in sudden, genuine alarm. She took a step back, her back hitting the wooden doorframe. “I didn't use a code! The door was already unlocked when I pushed my cart into the hallway!”
