Chapter 4 - The Syndicate’s Shadow

The shock gave way to an overwhelming, crushing wave of grief and joy. I buried my face in Leah’s soft hair and wept. I cried for the two years I had lost, for the birthdays I missed, and for the agonizing pain of a mother told her child was dead. Damian didn't interrupt. He stood by the window, staring out into the dark night, letting me process the impossible truth.
When my tears finally subsided, a new emotion took over: pure, unadulterated rage. "Who did this?" I asked, my voice trembling but suddenly fierce. Damian turned to face me. "The clinic in Zurich was a front," he explained, his tone completely business-like now. "It was operated by the Moretti family. My biggest rivals." He walked over to a massive oak desk and pulled out a file. "They used vulnerable, isolated women. Told them their babies died, then sold the infants on the black market or used them to extort wealthy families."
My stomach churned in absolute disgust. "They sold my baby?" I asked, appalled. "They were going to," Damian corrected. "I intercepted the shipment. I didn't know the extent of their operation at the time. I just knew I found a child in a crate, and I couldn't leave her behind." He looked at me, a dangerous glint in his eye. "The Morettis have been quiet for two years. But they are still out there."

"Dr. Aris," I said suddenly, the memory flashing clearly in my mind. "The doctor who told me she died. His name was Aris." Damian immediately picked up his phone. "Get me everything on a Dr. Aris," he barked into the receiver. "Connections to Zurich. Connections to Moretti. Now." He hung up and looked at me. "You are not a waitress anymore, Clara. You are the mother of a Caruso. And no one touches what is mine."
That night, they moved me into a guest suite connected to Leah’s bedroom. For the first time in two years, I slept with my child in my arms. I didn't close my eyes until dawn, terrified this was all a cruel dream. But every time Leah stirred, she reached for me, mumbling "Mama" in her sleep. And every time, my heart healed just a little bit more. However, outside these walls, a storm was gathering. The Morettis were not going to let this rest, and Damian was preparing for war.
