Chapter 5 - A Dangerous Proximity

Over the next two weeks, the Caruso mansion transformed. The heavy, oppressive silence that used to hang over the estate was completely broken. Leah was changing, and while it didn't happen overnight, the progress was miraculous. She started using small words like "More," "No," and "Home," but constantly, she called for "Mama." Every time she spoke, I saw Damian watch us from the doorway, a look of profound wonder on his face.

We were drawn together by the child we both loved. We started having dinners together, just the three of us. Damian began asking me about my life, my interests, and my past before Zurich. He listened with an intensity that made my skin tingle. Underneath the tailored suits and the terrifying reputation, I found a man who was deeply protective and surprisingly gentle. "You have a way of making this house feel warm," he said one evening as we sat on the terrace, watching Leah chase fireflies on the manicured lawn.

"It's easy when you're finally where you belong," I replied softly. He looked at me, his gaze dropping to my lips before snapping back to my eyes. "Are you?" he asked, his voice low. "Where you belong?" I smiled, "I'm with Leah. That's all that matters." He challenged me, taking a step closer, "Is it?" The air between us felt heavy, charged with something undeniable.

Before he could say another word, the sharp sound of shattering glass echoed from the perimeter. The alarm system blared, a piercing shriek that tore through the peaceful night. "Get inside!" Damian roared, instantly pulling a weapon from his holster. I didn't hesitate. I sprinted toward Leah, scooping her up into my arms as she whimpered, burying her face in my neck. Guards poured out of the house, shouting orders in the chaos.

"Lock down the safe room!" Damian ordered his head of security. He grabbed my arm, his grip firm but not painful, and pulled me toward the hidden passageway in the library. "What's happening?" I gasped, running as fast as I could with a toddler in my arms. "The Morettis," Damian growled, his eyes burning with lethal intent. "They found out you're here. They know who you are." He pushed us into the steel-reinforced room and turned to leave. "Damian!" I cried out. He paused, looking back at me as I begged, "Come back to us." For a fraction of a second, the mafia boss disappeared, and a man who finally had a family smiled at me. "Always." Then the heavy steel door slammed shut.
