Chapter 8 - The Empire's New Queen

Six months later, the Caruso estate was filled with a sound it had never known before: continuous, joyful laughter. Leah was running across the lush green lawn, playfully chasing a new golden retriever puppy Damian had bought her. Her vocabulary had completely exploded. She was no longer a silent, traumatized toddler, but a bright, happy, energetic three-year-old who never stopped talking. "Careful, tesoro!" Damian called out from his spot next to me on the shaded patio couch.
He had changed immensely. The dark, intimidating aura that used to follow him everywhere was gone, replaced by the quiet, grounded confidence of a man completely at peace with his world. He still ran the city and was still deeply feared by those who dared to break the rules. But inside these iron gates, he was just a father. And a husband. I looked down at the massive, flawless diamond ring sparkling on my left hand. We had married in a small, private ceremony in the estate's sprawling garden just a month ago.
I had gone from a grieving, exhausted waitress to the wife of the most powerful man in the city. But far more importantly, I was a mother again. "You're staring," Damian murmured, leaning over to press a soft kiss against my neck. "I'm just thinking," I smiled, leaning into his warm touch. "About how crazy this all is." He chuckled softly, "Fate works in mysterious ways, Mrs. Caruso." He rested his large hand on my slightly rounded stomach, his thumb tracing gentle circles over the fabric of my dress. "Speaking of mysterious ways... how is the newest addition feeling today?"

I laughed, placing my hand over his securely. "He or she is kicking like a maniac. I think we have another stubborn Caruso on our hands." Damian's dark eyes softened with absolute adoration. "Good. The world needs more of us." Just then, Leah ran up to us, out of breath and giggling uncontrollably. "Mama! Dada! Look!" She held up a slightly mangled, bright yellow dandelion. "For you!"
I took the tiny flower, kissing her chubby, flushed cheek. "Thank you, my sweet girl. It's beautiful." Damian pulled her onto his lap, tickling her sides until she shrieked with unfiltered joy. I watched my beautiful family, my heart so full it felt like it might genuinely burst. Two years ago, I thought my life was completely over in a cold hospital room in Zurich, doomed to never know the joy of a child's love. But fate, wrapped in a faded velvet rabbit and the familiar scent of vanilla lotion, had brought me back to exactly where I belonged. The silent little girl had found her voice, the ruthless mafia boss had found his heart, and I had finally found my home.
