Chapter 10 - The Looming Shadow

The fragile peace established within the Moretti estate proved to be the calm before an inevitable storm. Two weeks had passed since the dismantling of the Falcone syndicate and the elimination of Marcus Vance, and Isabelle was now entering her thirty-fourth week of pregnancy. The physical comfort of her upper residential suite and the attentive care provided by Dr. Harrison had allowed her strength to return fully, yet a persistent shadow of unease hung heavy over the sprawling compound.
Inside the subterranean tactical command center, Vincent Moretti stood before the illuminated wall monitors alongside Dominic, staring grimly at a series of encrypted intelligence decryption logs extracted from Marcus Vance’s personal offline server drives.
"We missed a secondary layer of encryption on Vance’s secondary financial portfolio, Boss," Dominic reported grimly, tapping a series of commands onto the central touchscreen to bring up a complex web of corporate entities, offshore shell accounts, and classified intelligence contracts. "Marcus wasn't just working with the Falcone syndicate as a local rival faction. He was serving as an intermediary for a much larger, federal-level syndicate umbrella known as the Syndicate Directorate—a coalition of organized crime families operating out of New York and Zurich."
Vincent’s jaw tightened into a rigid, dangerous line as he scanned the cascading columns of encrypted data. "The Directorate," he repeated coldly. "They operate above street-level gang wars. If they utilized Marcus Vance to plant that telemetry beacon inside Isabelle, the Falcone attack was merely a localized diversion to flush out our security posture."
"Exactly," Dominic nodded, his expression grave. "And according to these decryption logs, Vance’s death triggered an automated fail-safe protocol. A high-priority tactical retrieval team dispatched directly by the Directorate has already crossed into Illinois airspace, tracking the dormant, scrambled telemetry signal we thought we had completely neutralized."
Vincent’s dark eyes flashed with lethal fury. "The scrambler we placed on Isabelle's implant was effective locally, but an advanced military-grade tracking array operated by the Directorate can triangulate the micro-transmitter's baseline resonance even through a localized EMP pulse if they get within a two-mile radius."
"They're already closing in, Boss," Dominic warned, pulling up real-time satellite surveillance footage of the perimeter highways surrounding the Moretti estate. "A convoy of three unmarked tactical transport vehicles just bypassed the local toll cameras on Interstate 90 and is heading directly up the private access road toward our front gates."
Vincent did not hesitate for a single fraction of a second. He turned on his heel, his coat swirling around his legs as he strode purposefully toward the armory lockers. "Sound the general estate alarm. Deploy all perimeter security teams to the outer reinforced gates, and prepare the subterranean medical wing for immediate evacuation."

"Evacuation?" Dominic asked, his eyes widening slightly as he hurried to keep pace. "Where are we moving her?"
"We are moving her to the secure secondary safe house in the Wisconsin wilderness," Vincent ordered decisively, grabbing a customized tactical rifle from the wall rack and checking the magazine feed. "The Directorate wants the living proof of their corporate conspiracy back, and they are willing to burn this entire estate to the ground to get it. They will have to step over my corpse to touch her."
