Chapter 6 - Extraction of the Ghost

Back inside the subterranean medical wing of the Moretti estate, the sterile LED lights hummed softly as Isabelle Stanton tossed restlessly across the hospital bed, her breathing shallow and uneven as lingering feverish chills wracked her frame. Dr. Harrison stood quietly beside the monitoring console, adjusting the intravenous infusion rate of broad-spectrum antibiotics and stabilizing fluids to combat the severe physiological shock her body had endured during the diner attack and subsequent trauma.

The heavy biometric security doors hissed open smoothly, and Vincent Moretti strode into the trauma suite, his tall frame radiating an intense, suppressed energy. He had shed his damp, plaster-dusted wool coat, leaving him in a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up slightly over his muscular forearms, revealing dark, intricate scars etched across his skin—silent testaments to a violent past.

Dr. Harrison glanced up as the crime boss approached the bed, stepping away from the vital signs monitor to brief him quietly. "Her fever is beginning to break, Boss, and the uterine contractions have stabilized significantly thanks to the tocolytic medication we administered," the doctor reported in a low, professional murmur. "The baby's heart rate is back within a normal, healthy baseline range. However, she's still suffering from severe psychological shock and physical exhaustion. When she wakes up, her emotional state is going to be extremely fragile."

Vincent nodded slowly, his dark eyes resting upon Isabelle’s pale, tear-streaked face where she lay curled slightly on her side, her hands instinctively guarding her swollen stomach even in her restless sleep. The revelation of Marcus Vance’s confession had provided all the answers regarding how the micro-transmitter had been implanted during a fraudulent prenatal visit at a compromised West Side community clinic three months prior, but it left the most critical human question entirely unresolved: what was to be done with the young woman now that her life had been violently uprooted and permanently entangled with the Moretti syndicate?

"What about the telemetry capsule itself, Harrison?" Vincent asked quietly, keeping his voice down so as not to disturb her resting state. "Can it be safely extracted without endangering her or the pregnancy?"

Dr. Harrison crossed his arms, his expression turning thoughtful as he tapped a finger against his chin. "It's technically feasible, but it's an extremely delicate procedure," the surgeon explained cautiously. "The capsule is encapsulated within the myometrial wall adjacent to the placenta. Because the tissue has healed around the micro-transmitter over the past three months, performing a surgical extraction right now while she's carrying would carry a moderate risk of triggering premature labor or placental bleeding. However, if we wait until she reaches full term—roughly two more months—we can perform the surgical removal safely during the scheduled delivery procedure."

Vincent stared down at Isabelle, his jaw tightening slightly as he weighed the tactical and ethical implications of the doctor's assessment. Leaving a functioning, albeit currently scrambled, tracking beacon inside an innocent civilian's body within his own secure estate was an unacceptable security risk, yet subjecting her to immediate, high-risk invasive surgery while she was recovering from severe trauma was equally unviable.

"Keep the local signal jammer active twenty-four hours a day," Vincent instructed firmly, his gaze never leaving Isabelle's face. "Double the shielding around this entire medical wing to ensure zero telemetry leakage. And prepare a secure private recovery suite on the upper residential level of the estate once her immediate physical stability is confirmed—she will not be confined to a trauma ward indefinitely."

"Understood, Boss," Dr. Harrison replied, noting the unusual directive with a flicker of unspoken surprise in his eyes.

Before Vincent could reply, Isabelle stirred restlessly on the mattress, letting out a soft, distressed moan as her eyelids fluttered open. She blinked rapidly against the harsh brightness of the overhead medical lights, her breath catching in her throat as her gaze locked onto Vincent standing silently beside her bed. Panic flared instantly in her exhausted eyes, and she instinctively tried to pull herself backward against the headboard, her hands flying protectively over her stomach.

"Please... please don't hurt me," she whispered, her voice cracking with raw, unfiltered terror as the memories of the shattered diner window and the automatic gunfire came rushing back into her mind. "I told you... I don't know anything about the people who attacked us... I just want to go home."

Vincent stepped closer, his imposing demeanor softening slightly as he raised his hands in a deliberate gesture of non-aggression, stopping a few feet from the bed. "You are not going to be harmed, Isabelle," he said, his deep, resonant voice carrying an unexpected gentleness that seemed to cut through her panic. "The men who orchestrated that attack at the diner will never trouble you again. The threat has been permanently neutralized."

Isabelle stared at him, her chest heaving as she searched his dark, intense expression for any sign of deception or hidden malice. "Neutralized?" she repeated, her voice trembling violently. "My entire life was destroyed tonight! My diner is gone, my apartment is back on the West Side where I can't even safely return, and you're keeping me locked inside some kind of underground fortress... how is any of this normal?"

"It isn't normal," Vincent replied candidly, his tone unwavering and brutally honest. "Your life on the West Side is finished because your presence was deliberately targeted by my enemies using a medical conspiracy you knew nothing about. You were used as an unwitting pawn in a war you didn't start."

Isabelle let out a bitter, heartbroken sob, hot tears streaming down her pale cheeks as the overwhelming unfairness of her situation crashed over her with crushing weight. "A pawn... I'm just trying to work enough hours to pay off my mother's debts and bring my baby into the world safely, and now I'm trapped in the middle of a mafia war."

"You are not a pawn anymore," Vincent stated quietly, taking another step closer until he stood directly beside the mattress, looking down at her with a fierce, unwavering intensity that commanded her attention. "You are under my personal protection. No one will ever touch you or your child while you remain inside these walls."

Isabelle looked up into his dark, penetrating eyes, seeing a profound, guarded sorrow hidden deep beneath the dangerous authority of Chicago’s most ruthless crime boss—a quiet pain that mirrored the hollow ache resting deep within her own chest.
