Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in the Hallway

Harper stared in absolute disbelief from the kitchen threshold, her breath hitching as Gabriel Costa stepped into the cramped, dimly lit apartment like an invading monarch entering a conquered province. The narrow hallway suddenly felt claustrophobic, charged with a heavy, lethal tension that made the air difficult to inhale.

Trent struggled frantically against Marcus’s iron grip, his face flushing a deep, mottled red as he gasped for oxygen. “Get your hands off me! Who the hell do you think you are? Get out of my apartment before I call the police!”

Gabriel did not even deign to look at Trent immediately. His dark, unblinking gaze swept past the struggling man and locked onto Harper, noting the shattered ceramic mug at her feet, the fresh tears shining on her cheeks, and the angry red mark where Trent’s fingers had gripped her jaw just moments before.

“Call the police?” Gabriel finally spoke, his voice quiet, controlled, and carrying an absolute, chilling stillness. “Please, do. Tell them Gabriel Costa is standing in your hallway. I am certain they will be exceptionally eager to assist you.”

At the mention of his name, the color drained entirely from Trent’s face. The aggressive bluster vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, prickling sweat. Even in this neighborhood, everyone knew who Gabriel Costa was and what happened to people who crossed him.

“Mr... Mr. Costa,” Trent stammered, his body going completely limp against the wall as Marcus maintained his merciless grip. “I didn’t know... this is a private matter. We were just having a domestic—she’s my girlfriend—”

“She is not your property,” Gabriel interrupted, his tone hardening into steel as he took two measured steps forward until he stood directly in front of Trent.

Gabriel raised his right hand—the very hand that had hovered defensively over Harper’s face earlier that night—and placed his palm flat against Trent’s chest, pushing him back another half-foot with casual, terrifying strength.

“Mr. Costa, please,” Harper whispered, trembling as she stepped out from the kitchen. “Don’t do this. If you hurt him here, they’ll trace it back to me. He’ll make sure I pay for it.”

Gabriel turned his head slightly, his dark eyes softening just a fraction as they met hers. “No one is going to make you pay for anything ever again, Harper. That arrangement ended tonight.”

“You can’t just walk in here and take her!” Trent shouted, panic overriding his terror as he realized he was losing control of his victim. “She lives with me! She belongs here!”

Marcus slammed Trent back against the wall with a sharp grunt, cutting off his words instantly. “Shut your mouth before I close it permanently.”

Gabriel ignored Trent entirely, walking past him to stop a few feet away from Harper. He did not touch her, maintaining a respectful, protective distance that gave her back the autonomy she had been denied for years.

“Pack whatever you need,” Gabriel instructed quietly, his voice carrying an undeniable finality. “You are leaving this apartment right now.”

“Where... where am I supposed to go?” Harper asked, her voice cracking with exhaustion and fear of the unknown.

“To a place where no one will ever raise a hand to you again,” Gabriel answered simply. “My security team will handle the rest.”

Marcus pulled a set of heavy zip-ties from his coat pocket, binding Trent’s wrists behind his back with practiced efficiency before shoving him roughly down onto the living room sofa.

“You can’t do this!” Trent screamed, thrashing futilely against the restraints. “You’re kidnapping her! This is illegal!”

“Legality is a flexible concept, Mr. Miller,” Gabriel replied coldly without looking back, as he held out his hand to guide Harper toward the open door.
