Chapter 9 - Turning the Tide

The element of surprise was the only currency that mattered in a gunfight, and Victor’s men were entirely focused on the front loading bay where the smoking SUV sat as a decoy.
Gabriel moved swiftly through the dark, grease-stained interior of the breakroom corridor, motioning for Marcus to take the rear while he scaled the narrow service ladder leading to the upper catwalk. His injured arm throbbed with white-hot pain, but adrenaline pushed the physical trauma into the background.
Emerging silently onto the elevated steel grating, Gabriel spotted the sniper flat on his stomach, adjusting the scope of a heavy rifle aimed directly at the ground floor where his guards were positioned.
With two rapid strides, Gabriel closed the distance, bringing the heavy butt of his Browning down hard across the sniper’s skull. The man collapsed instantly without making a sound, slumping unconscious against the railing.
Gabriel retrieved the sniper’s specialized comms headset, listening in on Victor’s tactical chatter.
“Status report!” Victor’s voice barked through the earpiece from the opposite end of the warehouse floor. “Did you get a clean shot at Gabriel yet?”
Gabriel pressed the transmission button, his voice dropping an octave into a low, terrifying growl that echoed through the entire warehouse PA system. “He’s right behind you, Victor.”
A sudden, sharp gasp echoed across the open floor below. Victor spun around, frantically searching the upper catwalks just as Marcus and the remaining guards swarmed out from the eastern exit, cutting off all avenues of retreat.
“Surround him,” Gabriel commanded coldly, descending the metal stairs with slow, deliberate steps until he stood directly on the warehouse floor.
Victor backed up against a stack of wooden crates, his face contorting with panic as his armed associates slowly dropped their weapons under the overwhelming crossfire of Gabriel’s elite security detail.
“You... you planned this,” Victor stammered, raising his hands in surrender as Gabriel approached. “You knew I would make a move.”
“I knew you were a traitor waiting for an excuse,” Gabriel replied smoothly, stopping two feet away from his cousin. “You mistook my focus on personal matters for weakness. That was your final mistake.”
Marcus stepped forward with a pair of heavy steel cuffs, slamming them onto Victor’s wrists with brutal efficiency.
“Take him to the basement facility,” Gabriel ordered without breaking eye contact with his trembling cousin. “We have administrative matters to discuss regarding the future of the shipping lanes.”

As Victor was dragged away screaming into the shadows, the cavernous warehouse fell into a heavy, echoing silence. Gabriel turned around slowly to find Harper standing near the base of the stairs, still clutching the heavy iron wrench in her hand.
The smoke from the burning SUV drifted upward toward the high rafters, casting a dramatic, golden glow across the industrial floor. Gabriel walked over to her, stopping just a few inches away. The tension between them had shifted entirely, transformed from a cautious dance of secrets into something raw and undeniable.
