Chapter 6 - The Safehouse and the Silence

The black luxury SUV glided smoothly through the deserted downtown streets, moving through the rain-slicked asphalt like a ghost. Harper sat quietly in the plush leather backseat, staring blankly out the window as the familiar neon lights of the city blurred into streaks of red and yellow.

Gabriel sat beside her, maintaining a respectful distance while keeping a watchful eye on her posture. Throughout the twenty-minute drive, neither of them spoke. The heavy silence inside the vehicle was not uncomfortable; it was a protective bubble shielding Harper from the turbulent reality she had just escaped.

The vehicle turned down a private, gated drive flanked by towering stone walls and thick rows of ancient oak trees, eventually stopping before a secluded, modern glass-and-stone estate nestled against the edge of the riverbank. There were no flashing neon signs, no noisy neighbors, and no ominous shadows lingering in stairwells.

“We’re here,” Gabriel said softly, breaking the long silence as Marcus cut the engine.

Harper blinked, turning her head slowly to look at him. “Is this... where do you live?”

“This is a secure residence,” Gabriel replied, opening his door and stepping out into the cool night air before walking around to open hers. “You will be safe here. No one knows this address except my most trusted men.”

Harper stepped out of the vehicle, her legs feeling weak and unstable beneath her. The sheer quiet of the estate was overwhelming after years of living in a constant state of hyper-vigilance, listening for footsteps, slamming doors, and raised voices.

Marcus led them inside through a heavy double door into a sprawling, minimalist foyer lit by soft recessed lighting. A middle-aged woman with kind eyes and a sharp, observant demeanor stepped out from the hallway, wiping her hands on a pristine kitchen towel.

“Boss,” the woman said, her gaze shifting instantly to Harper. She took in the pale skin, the bruised jaw barely hidden beneath fading makeup, and the rigid, defensive angle of her shoulders. Without missing a beat, she stepped forward. “My name is Martha. I’ve prepared the guest suite on the second floor. Let’s get you cleaned up, child.”

Harper hesitated, looking back at Gabriel, who stood near the entryway with his hands resting in his coat pockets.

“Go with her, Harper,” Gabriel instructed gently. “There are fresh clothes, hot water, and medical supplies waiting upstairs. We can talk in the morning.”

Harper swallowed hard, her throat tight with emotion she had suppressed for years. She nodded slowly, following Martha down the wide hallway without looking back.

Gabriel watched them ascend the grand staircase until they disappeared from view. He turned slowly toward Marcus, his expression hardening back into the granite mask he wore for the outside world.

“Is the apartment cleared?” Gabriel asked coldly.

“Everything of hers has been packed and brought over,” Marcus reported, pulling a small notebook from his pocket. “As for Trent, we left him tied up long enough for him to understand the cost of breaking our rules. However, my sources at the docks indicate that Victor is moving faster than anticipated. He’s planning to intercept our next shipment tomorrow morning, using the chaos surrounding our distraction to make his move.”

Gabriel’s eyes flashed with a dangerous, icy fire. “Victor thinks because I’m dealing with domestic affairs that my grip on the syndicate has weakened.”

“Shall we handle him?” Marcus asked, his hand resting casually near his holster.

“No,” Gabriel replied, stepping toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the dark river. “We let him make his move. Let him expose every single rat in the organization. Tomorrow, we dismantle both problems at once.”
