Chapter 3 - Secrets Buried Beneath the Concrete

The adrenaline surging through Nora's veins began to shift, giving way to a cold, creeping wave of shock.

A fine tremor passed through her shoulders. She clenched her jaw hard, fiercely furious at herself for showing any outward sign of weakness.

She had managed to maintain absolute professional composure through corporate crises, police investigations, and hostile takeovers, but standing this close to Declan Gallagher in the dark was testing every defense she possessed.

She refused to break down in front of him.

The heavy silence stretched between them for several long, agonizing seconds, broken only by the faint hum of the dying emergency battery.

Then, Declan moved.

It wasn't a threatening gesture.

He didn't grab her arm, and he didn't try to force her compliance.

Instead, his hand moved with an unexpected, extraordinary gentleness that startled her completely out of her defensive posture.

He lifted his left hand. His knuckles were ruined, bruised, and caked in drying blood.

Yet his long fingers moved with surprising care.

A stray, loose curl of Nora's dark hair had fallen across her flushed cheek during the fall.

Declan caught the strand between his scarred fingers.

His bruised knuckles brushed lightly, delicately against her sensitive jawline as he swept the hair back.

The contrast between his rough, dangerous skin and the softness of her face sent an involuntary shiver down her spine.

He neatly tucked the curl behind her small ear.

His warm fingers lingered there for a fraction of a second longer than was strictly necessary.

His thumb rested right over the rapid, frantic pulse hammering beneath her jaw.

He could feel her heart racing wildly against his skin.

“Breathe, Nora,” he instructed softly.

The harsh edge had entirely vanished from his deep voice, replaced by a low, grounding timber.

“You're safe.”

Nora stared up into his dark, intense eyes, caught between utter disbelief and a strange, magnetic pull.

“I'm trapped inside a broken metal box forty floors in the air with a bleeding crime lord,” her voice shook slightly despite her best efforts. “Safe is a relative term at best.”

A soft, dark breath escaped Declan's lips—a sound that might have resembled a genuine laugh under completely different circumstances.

He didn't immediately pull his hand away.

Instead, his thumb stroked once across her jawline, anchoring her against the glass.

“In my world, safety is never a permanent state,” Declan said quietly, his eyes searching her face as if looking for something he had lost years ago. “It's something you carve out of the chaos day by day. And right now, protecting you is the only objective that matters to me.”

Nora's breath caught in her throat.

Before she could process the weight of his words, a muffled, metallic explosion echoed from deep within the elevator shaft far above them.

The entire car shuddered violently once more, dropping another six inches before the manual brakes finally engaged with a deafening screech of sparks and hot iron.

Declan reacted instantly.

Without a second thought, he dropped his hand from her face and threw his entire weight against her, shielding her small body with his own as a shower of concrete dust and hot metal fragments rained down from the ceiling hatch.

“They're trying to blast the hatch open,” Declan growled, his body pressed heavily against hers, radiating intense heat and raw power.

“Can they do that?” Nora asked, her face buried against his torn white shirt, inhaling the overwhelming scent of copper, blood, and expensive cologne.

“Let them try,” Declan whispered darkly.

He reached down to the waistband of his trousers with his uninjured hand, his fingers sliding beneath the fabric with practiced familiarity.

When he pulled his hand back out, the matte-black, suppressed Sig Sauer pistol caught the dim amber light of the emergency bulb.

The metallic click of the safety disengaging sounded deafeningly loud inside the confined space.

Nora realized with a jolt of stark terror that the corporate spreadsheet she had been staring at just thirty minutes ago belonged to a completely different universe.

This was Declan Gallagher's real world—a world built on blood, concrete, betrayal, and absolute violence.

Yet, as she stood locked against his chest with his muscular arm wrapped securely around her waist to keep her safe from falling debris, she didn't feel the paralyzing terror she expected.

She felt an electric, dangerous clarity.

Above them, heavy boots slammed down onto the metal roof of the elevator car.

The muffled sound of heavy machinery being dragged across the steel hatch sent a fresh wave of concrete dust cascading down into the cab.

Declan shifted his stance, adjusting his grip on the firearm while keeping Nora safely positioned behind his broad shoulder.

“Stay behind me,” he commanded quietly, his voice hard as iron.

The overhead hatch suddenly exploded inward in a shower of sparks and twisted steel, as two masked figures dropped weapon-first into the dim amber light of the elevator shaft.
