Chapter 5 - The Inheritance of Power

The heavy hydraulic jaws of the rescue team tore through the reinforced steel elevator doors with a deafening, metallic screech that rattled every tooth in Nora's head.

A blinding wedge of white garage light suddenly slashed into the dim, smoke-filled interior of the cab, chasing away the shadows that had cocooned them for the last hour.

Rough, capable hands reached inside, grabbing Declan by his good arm and hauling him out into the cool, concrete expanse of the underground parking garage.

Nora scrambled out right behind him, blinking furiously against the harsh glare of the overhead fluorescents and the blinding headlights of three black SUVs idling nearby.

A half-dozen heavily armed men in unmarked tactical gear swarmed the area, securing the perimeter while their leader—a scarred, middle-aged enforcer named Victor—rushed forward to support his bleeding boss.

“Get the medic kit from the lead vehicle now,” Victor ordered sharply, his eyes darting anxiously over Declan's shredded shoulder and blood-soaked shirt. “And someone get Miss Hayes a blanket and water. Move!”

“I'm fine,” Nora said immediately, brushing dust and soot from her ruined silk skirt. Her hands were shaking violently now that the immediate adrenaline rush had finally begun to fade, but she kept her chin held high.

Declan sank heavily into the plush leather backseat of the nearest armored SUV, wincing as Victor applied immediate pressure to his wound.

He looked out the open door at Nora, who stood rigidly beside the vehicle, clutching her laptop bag like a lifeline.

“Get in,” Declan commanded, his voice back to its usual commanding authority.

“I need to call a cab and go home, Mr. Gallagher,” she replied, stepping back instinctively. “My mother is waiting at St. Jude's, and—'”

“Your mother was transferred to a private, high-security medical suite at Rush University Hospital twenty minutes ago,” Declan interrupted smoothly, watching her reaction closely. “At my direct instruction. Her bills are paid in full for the next ten years.”

Nora froze mid-step, her eyes widening in sheer disbelief.

“You... what?”

“You think I didn't know why my best financial analyst was burning the midnight oil every single night?” Declan gave a dark, knowing smile, leaning back against the leather headrest. “I know everything that happens inside my company, Nora. Every number, every spreadsheet, and every employee in trouble.”

He patted the empty leather seat beside him.

“Get in the car. We have a lot to discuss about row 42, column C—and what happens to the people who tried to steal from us tonight.”

Nora stood frozen for three heartbeats, weighing her options, her ethics, and the terrifying, magnetic gravity of the man sitting before her.

Then, slowly, she climbed into the armored vehicle and pulled the heavy door shut behind her.

The SUV surged forward into the Chicago night, leaving the shattered elevator shaft and the smoking ruins of a corporate war far behind.
