Chapter 9 - The Hospital Corridor

The private VIP wing of Rush University Hospital smelled faintly of lemon disinfectant and expensive white lilies.
Nora practically sprinted down the carpeted hallway, her heels clicking a frantic rhythm against the floor, with Declan walking stride-for-stride beside her despite the lingering stiffness in his bandaged shoulder.
Two of Declan's tactical enforcers—Victor and a towering, silent brute named Marcus—flanked them like living gargoyles, clearing the corridor of stray nurses and lingering visitors without a single word.
They reached Room 412, where an agitated hospital administrator was arguing heatedly with a head nurse near the doorway.
“I'm telling you, without the direct familial signature or a federal override code, we cannot admit her into the neurological intensive unit!” the administrator insisted, waving a stack of clipped insurance forms.
“You'll admit her right now,” a cold, deep voice cut through the corridor like a falling guillotine.
The administrator spun around, his eyes widening in sheer terror as he locked gazes with Declan Gallagher.
Chicago's most feared underworld kingpin stood tall in the hospital hallway, his dark eyes gleaming with lethal intent, flanked by armed guards and cold authority.
“M-Mr. Gallagher,” the administrator stammered, taking an involuntary step back against the wall. “I didn't realize you were personally backing this patient—”
“You realize it now,” Declan stepped closer, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly soft whisper. “Get the paperwork processed, sign the authorization under Gallagher corporate liability, and have her settled in the penthouse suite within five minutes. Or you can explain to the medical board why you're suddenly looking for a new career.”
The administrator grabbed the clipboard, nodded frantically, and bolted down the hallway toward the nursing station without uttering another word.
Nora stood frozen beside Declan, staring through the glass window of Room 412 at her mother, who was resting peacefully in an adjustable medical bed, surrounded by monitors and floral arrangements that hadn't been there an hour ago.
A lump formed tightly in Nora's throat. For three years, she had carried the crushing financial and emotional weight of her mother's illness entirely alone, sacrificing her youth, her savings, and her safety.
Now, with a single word from the dangerous man standing beside her, the burden had simply vanished.
“Thank you,” Nora whispered, her voice cracking slightly for the first time since he had walked into her office the previous evening.

Declan turned his head, looking down at her with an expression completely stripped of corporate coldness.
“You don't ever have to thank me for protecting what's yours, Nora,” he murmured softly, reaching out to gently brush another loose lock of dark hair behind her ear. “Your debt to Gallagher Enterprises is paid in full. But you're never leaving my side again.”
