Chapter 10 - A New Dawn Over the Estate

The early morning sun breaks through the tall, arched windows of the estate, painting the room in pale gold.

Downstairs, the quiet hum of vacuum cleaners and shifting furniture signals that the mess is being erased.

The shattered crystal, the spilled wine, and the wilting roses are being cleared away into history.

At eight in the morning, a light knock sounds at my bedroom door.

Mrs. Carter enters pushing a mahogany rolling cart bearing fresh fruit, scrambled eggs, and hot black coffee.

"Good morning, my dear," the older woman smiles warmly, looking happier than she has in months.

"Mr. Moretti ordered this prepared specifically for you before he left for the downtown offices."

"He left already?" I ask, a strange, unexpected pang of disappointment tightening in my chest.

"He had three city commissioners and two federal attorneys to deal with before breakfast," she laughs softly.

"He also instructed the estate tailor to come by this afternoon to take your measurements for new clothes."

"Mrs. Carter, this is all happening too fast," I say, shaking my head as I sip the rich coffee.

"I was dragging fifty pounds of roses through a dining room twelve hours ago, terrified of my landlord."

"God works in mysterious ways, child," Mrs. Carter says gently, adjusting the blanket around my cast.

"That man has been surrounded by parasites and ruthless killers since his father died."

"He can smell deception from three miles away, but he can also recognize a pure soul when it crosses his path."

Around noon, the bedroom door opens again, and Daniel, the head of security, steps in holding a tablet.

"Miss Brooks," Daniel says with a respectful nod, using a title no one in this house had ever given me.

"There is a visitor downstairs who has been cleared by Mr. Moretti to see you."

He steps aside, and an orderly wheels a lightweight wheelchair into the doorway.

Sitting inside, wrapped in a thick wool blanket with a warm knit hat, is Martha Vance.

Her face is still pale, and her hands are bandaged from the frostbite, but her eyes are shining with life.

"Martha!" I cry out, struggling to sit up straighter in the bed.

The elderly woman reaches forward, taking my hands in hers, her grip surprisingly strong.

"My sweet girl," Martha weeps softly, pressing my knuckles against her wrinkled cheek.

"The doctors told me what happened... how you broke your foot trying to save an old fool like me."

"I couldn't just leave you in that freezing dark, Martha," I whisper, tears flowing freely once more.

"Because of you, my Julian can finally rest in peace," Martha says, her voice trembling with emotion.

"The police found Victoria’s private safety deposit box this morning... Julian’s personal journal was inside."

"She kept it as a trophy of her kill."

"Now they are sending recovery divers to the exact marina coordinates he wrote about in his final entry."

"My boy is coming home to be buried beside his father."

We sit together in the quiet sunlight of the high bedroom, holding hands and sharing tears of relief.

Later that evening, as twilight turns the Chicago skyline into a canvas of purple and indigo, the door opens again.

Luca steps inside, his coat slung over his shoulder, his tie loosened at the collar.

He looks at Martha, then looks at me, a profound, peaceful stillness settling over his rugged features.

"The divers found Julian's remains, Martha," Luca says quietly, delivering the final closure with gentle reverence.

Martha closes her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering sigh of profound release.

"Thank you, Mr. Moretti," the old woman whispers. "Thank you for bringing justice to my family."

After Daniel escorts Martha back to her private suite downstairs, Luca remains standing by the foot of my bed.

The house is dead quiet now, the storm of betrayal and violence having finally passed.

"How does the ankle feel?" he asks, his dark eyes holding mine with steady, quiet warmth.

"It hurts less today," I answer softly, offering him a small, genuine smile.

"Good," Luca says, taking a step closer, his hand resting gently against the mahogany bedpost.

"Because tomorrow, Natalie, we begin writing a completely different story for this house."
