Chapter 11 - The Shadow of the Bellini Empire

The sunlight filtering through the tall arched windows does little to warm the cold reality settling over Chicago.

By morning, the city newspapers have exploded with headlines about the sudden raid on the Moretti estate.

Every major broadsheet carries blurry photographs of Victoria Campbell being led away in federal handcuffs.

Reporters are clamoring outside the wrought-iron perimeter gates, their telephoto lenses trained on the stone driveway.

Inside the private library, Luca stands by the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, swirling black coffee in a porcelain cup.

Across from him, Marco spreads four leather-bound ledgers and a tablet across the sprawling mahogany desk.

"Victoria Campbell might be behind bars, Luca, but her arrest cracked open an entirely different hornets' nest," Marco says grimly.

Luca takes a slow sip, his eyes unblinking behind the thin veil of steam.

"The Bellini syndicate," Luca states, his voice flat and even.

"Exactly," Marco replies, tapping a finger against the glowing tablet screen.

"Don Bellini's actual brother, Silvio Bellini, arrived in Chicago on a private flight from Palermo three hours ago."

"He doesn't care that Victoria was an impostor who stole his dead niece's identity."

"He only cares that the merger between our shipping lines and their Mediterranean docks fell apart on live television."

"Silvio is claiming we orchestrated the entire scandal to humiliate his bloodline and seize their cargo routes."

Luca sets the coffee cup down with a sharp, precise click against the saucer.

"Silvio is using his dead niece's name as an excuse to launch a territory grab before winter freeze sets in."

"He knows our northern transport corridors are vulnerable if the Great Lakes terminals freeze over."

The heavy oak door to the library creaks open, interrupting the tense strategy session.

I step carefully over the threshold, leaning on a polished walnut walking cane Dr. Harris provided this morning.

My left ankle is still wrapped in a reinforced medical boot, but I refuse to stay confined to that third-floor bed.

"Natalie," Luca's tone shifts instantly, the lethal coldness in his posture melting into quiet concern.

He moves across the Persian rug before I can take three uneven steps, offering his arm for support.

"Dr. Harris told you to rest that joint for another forty-eight hours," he says softly.

"Resting won't pay for the groceries, Mr. Moretti," I answer, managing a faint, teasing smile.

"You are the head of household operations now," he reminds me, his hand warm against my forearm. "You give orders, you don't carry them."

"If I don't inspect the inventory logs after last night's disaster, your pantry will run dry by Tuesday," I counter.

Marco chuckles softly behind the desk, closing the ledgers with an amused shake of his head.

"She's already better at managing your temper than any underboss in this territory, Luca," Marco observes.

Luca does not deny it; his dark gaze lingers on my face, searching for any lingering trace of fear or pain.

"Silvio Bellini has requested a formal sit-down tonight at the Drake Hotel," Marco continues, turning serious once more.

"He demands compensation for the broken alliance, or he shuts down our freighters at the mouth of the St. Lawrence River."

Luca's jaw hardens, the relaxed warmth disappearing behind his granite mask.

"Silvio doesn't get a dime from my family," Luca says quietly. "Tell him I will meet him at nine o'clock."

"Take Daniel and twelve armed men," Marco advises.

"No," Luca says, his eyes cutting sideways toward the security monitors on the wall.

"If I bring an army, Silvio assumes I am negotiating from a place of weakness."

"I will bring Marco, Daniel... and my new estate director to show that our household remains entirely unbreakable."

My breath hitches in my throat as his words hit me.

"You want me to go to a sit-down with Sicilian mobsters?" I ask, my heart hammering against my ribs.

Luca looks straight into my eyes, his voice steady as iron.

"You faced down a killer with a broken bone and protected an innocent woman without blinking, Natalie."

"Those men in silk suits at the Drake are hyenas, but they only bite when they smell fear."

"Stand by my side tonight, and let them see the kind of steel that actually runs this house."
