Chapter 15 - The New Foundation

Two weeks later, the first dusting of November snow blankets the sweeping lawns of the Moretti estate in pristine white.
The grand dining hall, once stained with dropped crystal and cold whispers, is filled with light and warmth.
A roaring fire crackles in the massive stone hearth, casting dancing golden light across the polished mahogany table.
Instead of twenty-four conniving syndicate bosses and corrupt politicians, the table is set for three.
Martha Vance sits near the head of the table, wrapped in a plush cashmere shawl Luca gifted her for her birthday.
Her silver hair is neatly coiffed, her face radiant with a peace she hasn't known in six long years.
"This roast beef is nearly as good as mine, Mrs. Carter," Martha laughs, winking at the proud head housekeeper.
"That's high praise coming from an Oak Park grandmother," Mrs. Carter beams, pouring hot cider into crystal goblets.
I sit beside Martha, wearing a soft cream cashmere sweater and dark tailored trousers, my walking cast finally replaced by a light brace.
For the first time in my twenty-nine years of life, the crushing anxiety of survival has completely vanished from my spirit.
My rent is paid, my future is secured, and my heart feels fuller than the grand estate around us.
At the head of the table sits Luca, watching the laughter and easy banter with a quiet, contented smile.
He raises his goblet of aged red wine, tapping the side gently with a silver spoon.
"A toast," Luca announces, the room quieting as we turn our attention toward him.
"To family," Luca begins, his dark eyes sweeping over Martha and Mrs. Carter before settling firmly on mine.
"Not the family we are born into with oaths of blood and violence."
"But the family we choose through honesty, courage, and unconditional loyalty."
"To home," Martha echoes with tears of joy shining in her eyes.
We raise our glasses, the crystal chiming softly together in a harmonious ring of true peace.
After dinner, when the table has been cleared and Martha has retired to the library to read by the hearth, Luca asks me to step outside.
We walk out onto the grand stone terrace, the cold night air crisp and clean against our cheeks.
Snowflakes drift down from the charcoal sky, melting instantly against the warm stone balustrade.
Luca steps close beside me, taking off his woolen scarf and wrapping it gently around my neck.
"Cold?" he asks softly.
"Not at all," I smile, looking up into his rugged, striking face under the moonlight.
"You've rebuilt this entire estate in fourteen days, Luca. The staff is happy. The threats are gone."
"Not quite everything," he murmurs, his dark eyes reflecting the soft glow of the terrace lanterns.
He reaches into his coat pocket and brings out a small, velvet-lined jeweler's box.
My breath catches in my throat, my fingers tightening against the stone railing.
He opens the lid with a gentle click.
Inside lies not an ostentatious diamond or a stolen jewel, but a delicate platinum band set with a single, brilliant white sapphire.
"The sapphire represents truth, Natalie," Luca says, his voice thick with rare, honest vulnerability.
"I spent years looking for a woman who could fit into the world my father built."
"I thought I needed a cold queen who knew how to navigate political poison."
"I was wrong."
"I needed someone with the strength to remind me who I am when the darkness tries to swallow this house."
He lifts the ring from the velvet cushion, holding it between his strong, steady fingers.
"I don't expect you to forget where I come from, or the world I live in," he continues softly.
"And I will never force you to accept a life you don't want."
"But if you are willing to stand beside me, not as my director, not as my employee, but as my equal..."
"I want you to be the master of this estate, and the keeper of my heart."
Tears prick the corners of my eyes, warm and healing as they spill down onto the soft wool of his scarf.
I look at the ring, then look deep into the dark, steady eyes of the man who chose honor over empire.
"Five more steps," I whisper with a trembling smile.
Luca blinks, a curious, gentle look in his gaze. "What?"
"The night of your engagement party," I say softly, stepping forward until my chest touches his coat.
"I told myself I only needed to take five more steps across the floor before my body gave out."
"I thought those steps were going to lead to my ruin."
"I didn't realize they were leading me straight to you."
I lift my left hand and place it gently into his open palm.
"Yes, Luca," I whisper into the quiet falling snow. "I will stand by you."
A breathtaking, triumphant smile spreads across his face as he slides the platinum ring onto my finger.

He pulls me into his arms, lifting me effortlessly off the stone terrace as the city lights shimmer in the distance.
The white roses in the cold basement are gone, replaced forever by a promise that will never freeze.
