Chapter 12 - THE RAID ON THE EVANSTON WAREHOUSE

The abandoned brick warehouse on the industrial banks of the Chicago River loomed dark and silent against the pre-dawn sky.

Our three-car convoy of black armored SUVs slid silently into the loading bay without turning on their high beams.

The tactical team fanned out instantly, securing the perimeter exits while Luca and I stepped out into the chill river breeze.

I wore a dark tactical trench coat over my business attire, my new glasses reflecting the amber glow of the distant streetlights.

Arthur's decryption keys had given us the exact administrative backdoor to override the warehouse's biometric security locks.

We moved through the ground-floor receiving area, navigating past rows of dusty shipping crates until we reached the reinforced steel door of the second-floor control room.

Luca raised his hand, signaling the lead guard to deploy the electronic bypass device against the keypad.

Bip-bip-click.

The heavy steel door swung inward smoothly, revealing the glowing array of server racks humming softly in the dark room.

Seated at the main terminal, furiously typing commands into a laptop while frantically stuffing hard drives into a duffel bag, was Patricia Wells.

She froze in absolute terror as the overhead lights clicked on, illuminating our reflection in her computer monitor.

She spun around in her chair, her face turning chalk-white when she saw Luca Moretti standing in the doorway.

Mr... Mr. Moretti, she stammered, her voice shaking uncontrollably as she tried to force a weak, unconvincing smile.

This... this is an unexpected pleasure. I was just reviewing our private staffing contracts for the upcoming quarter.

You're reviewing your final moments of freedom, Patricia, Luca replied coldly, walking slowly into the room.

He gestured toward the open duffel bag overflowing with encrypted hard drives and paper blackmail records.

You built an entire criminal enterprise on extortion, corporate espionage, and framing innocent people like Mrs. Carter.

Patricia realized the game was entirely over, her desperate facade dissolving into bitter resignation.

You think locking me up changes anything? she sneered, her voice turning venomous.

Vanessa already has copies of everything stored in secure offshore drops across Europe! The moment I don't check in by noon, the entire Moretti empire's dirty laundry goes public!

Let them try, I spoke up, stepping forward into the light and placing my leather briefcase on her desk.

I opened it to reveal the decrypted server logs and the precise tracking numbers of her European offshore drops.

While you were packing your duffel bag, Mr. Moretti's cyber security team already rerouted every single one of your offshore accounts back into the estate's philanthropic foundation.

Your backup drops are empty, Mrs. Wells.

Patricia stared at me in stunned disbelief, her mouth hanging open as she realized every single contingency she had planned had been systematically dismantled.

Luca motioned to the guards, who stepped forward and clamped heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.

Pack every single server, hard drive, and paper document into evidence boxes, Luca ordered calmly.

And take her to the federal holding facility to join Gregory Vance and Arthur Pendelton.

As Patricia was hauled out of the room cursing and thrashing against her restraints, I let out a long, shuddering breath of profound relief.

The storm was finally over.

The conspiracy that had threatened to tear the Moretti family apart had been completely eradicated from the roots up.
