Chapter 15 - THE DAWN OF A NEW EMPIRE

Six months had passed since the chaotic night of the engagement dinner that nearly destroyed the Moretti estate.
Spring had finally returned to Chicago, painting the manicured lawns in vibrant shades of emerald green and filling the courtyard gardens with the sweet scent of blooming lilacs.
Inside the grand executive office on the second floor—my office now—the morning sunlight streamed through the immaculate floor-to-ceiling windows.
I sat behind the spacious mahogany desk, reviewing the final quarterly financial reports for Moretti Logistics and Moretti Global Properties.
Every single department was operating at peak efficiency, the corrupted elements completely purged, and the corporate ledgers completely transparent and clean.
Mrs. Carter walked into the office carrying a silver tray with a steaming cup of Colombian dark roast coffee, placing it neatly beside my laptop with a warm, maternal smile.
You're starting your workday early again, Megan, Mrs. Carter teased gently, adjusting the collar of her crisp apron.
Mr. Moretti specifically instructed me to make sure you take a fifteen-minute break to enjoy the morning sun in the courtyard.
I looked up from my screen, smiling warmly at the woman who had become both a trusted mentor and a dear friend.
I'm just finishing up the final international shipping audits, Mrs. Carter, I assured her.
Everything is balanced down to the last penny.
Before Mrs. Carter could reply, the heavy double doors of the office swung open, and Luca Moretti stepped inside.
He wore a tailored navy suit and an open-collared white shirt, looking every bit the powerful, unshakeable head of the Moretti empire, yet his expression was relaxed and lit by a genuine smile.
He dismissed Mrs. Carter with a polite nod, walking across the room until he stood right beside my desk.
How is the new chief administrative director handling her morning workload? he asked playfully, resting his hands on the edge of the wood.
Excellently, Mr. Moretti, I replied, leaning back in my leather chair and looking up at him with a confident grin.
Though she is currently being harassed by her boss to abandon her paperwork and go outside into the sunshine.
It's not harassment if it's a direct executive order, Luca chuckled softly, extending his hand toward me.
Come on. The gardens are fully bloomed, and we have a morning walk to take before the afternoon board meeting.
I stood up, sliding my hand into his warm, firm grasp, and let him lead me out of the office and down the grand staircase toward the sunlit estate grounds.
As we strolled side by side along the stone pathway lined with blooming cherry blossoms, I took a deep breath of the fresh spring air.
My glasses rested comfortably on my face, clear and unbreakable.
My bank account was secure, my mother's medical debts were fully paid, and my future was entirely my own to write.
I wasn't the terrified, struggling twenty-seven-year-old banquet server hiding in the shadows anymore.
I was a partner, an equal, and the co-architect of a new, unbreakable legacy.
Luca squeezed my hand gently, stopping by the edge of the sparkling fountain to look down into my eyes.
What are you thinking about, Megan? he asked softly.
I looked past him toward the towering, majestic stone pillars of the Moretti mansion, then back to the man who had changed my entire world.
I was just thinking, I smiled, that polishing bookshelves really is far more complicated than it looks.
May you like
Luca threw his head back and laughed—a rich, genuine sound that echoed warmly across the courtyard and carried away every last shadow of the past.
He pulled me closer against his side as we continued our walk, ready to face whatever tomorrow brought, together.
