Chapter 10 - UNRAVELING THE WEB

The blinding red emergency strobe lights painted the marble foyer in jagged streaks of crimson and shadow as four armed security guards swarmed the base of the grand staircase.

The intruder, trapped in absolute darkness and completely disoriented by the shrieking alarm, panicked and bolted blindly toward the French doors leading out to the rear gardens.

He didn't even make it three steps.

Luca Moretti moved with the blinding speed of a striking predator, clearing the distance across the foyer in a heartbeat and tackling the intruder squarely to the polished floor.

The dark-clad figure hit the marble with a violent crash, the tactical backpack flying off their shoulders and spilling a collection of lock-picking tools, digital sniffers, and a heavy leather-bound ledger across the floor.

The security guards descended upon the fallen figure instantly, pinning his arms behind his back and ripping the black balaclava off his head.

The harsh emergency lights illuminated the terrified, sweat-streaked face of a young man in his early thirties—someone I vaguely recognized from the administrative logs.

It was Arthur Pendelton, Patricia Wells' junior partner and chief IT technician at the Evanston employment agency.

Hold him right there, Luca ordered coldly, standing up and brushing the dust off his trousers without a single sign of exertion.

Bring him down to the underground security wing immediately.

The guards hoisted Arthur up by his elbows, dragging him kicking and muttering toward the basement service elevator while the deafening wail of the security alarm finally wound down into silence.

I walked slowly down the grand staircase, my heart still pounding against my ribs, stepping carefully around the scattered lock-picking tools on the floor.

Luca turned around, his sharp grey eyes finding me instantly in the dim lighting of the foyer.

Are you alright, Megan? he asked, his voice dropping into a tone of genuine concern that he reserved exclusively for me.

I'm fine, sir, I replied, taking a steadying breath as I pointed down at the leather-bound ledger lying near the base of the stairs.

Though I think he was trying to recover that specific ledger before your board meeting on Monday morning.

Luca walked over, knelt down on one knee, and picked up the heavy leather book.

He flipped it open, revealing page after page of handwritten financial notes, offshore account passwords, and detailed lists of blackmail targets that Patricia Wells and Vanessa Bellini had compiled over the past three years.

It's the master ledger, Luca murmured, a grim smile touching the corners of his mouth.

Every single shell company, every corrupted official, and every illicit transaction they used to bleed high-society families across Chicago is documented right here in black and white.

He stood up, looking directly at me with an expression of profound, unshakable admiration.

You didn't just avoid panicking when the alarm sounded, Megan, he said softly.

You engineered a textbook perimeter trap, cut the power to disorient an experienced tech infiltrator, and delivered the final, missing piece of the puzzle right into my hands.

I lowered my gaze, feeling a warm, emotional flush spread across my cheeks.

I just wanted to protect the estate, Mr. Moretti, I whispered.

You protected much more than an estate, Megan, he replied, stepping closer until only a few inches separated us.

You protected my family's honor, my future, and everything I've spent my entire life building.

He reached out, his warm fingers gently brushing against my hand as he took the ledger from my grasp.

The entire conspiracy is completely dismantled, root and branch, he said quietly.

Patricia Wells, Gregory Vance, Arthur Pendelton, and Vanessa Bellini—they will all face federal prosecution with zero chance of escape or bail.

He paused, his grey eyes searching my face with an intense, quiet vulnerability.

And as for you... no more late-night security patrols, no more hiding in the shadows, and no more worrying about whether you can afford the basic necessities of life.

You are the chief administrative director of the Moretti empire now.

And whatever comes next, we face it together.

I looked up into his eyes, the lingering ghosts of fear and insecurity finally melting away entirely into the quiet warmth of the Chicago night.

I smiled, my hand resting gently against his palm.

Together, Mr. Moretti, I repeated softly.

And for the first time in my life, I knew with absolute certainty that my future was secure, unbreakable, and entirely my own.CHAPTER 11 — THE INTERROGATION OF ARTHUR PENDELTON

The subterranean holding facility beneath the Moretti estate was cold, quiet, and smelling faintly of damp concrete and polished steel.

Bright halogen lights illuminated the austere white interrogation room where Arthur Pendelton sat handcuffed to a heavy metal bolted table.

His hands shook violently as he stared at the polished stainless steel surface, his arrogance completely evaporated after his failed midnight break-in.

The heavy iron door swung open with a hollow metallic echo, and Luca Moretti walked into the room.

He didn't wear his jacket, his sleeves rolled up slightly to reveal the taut muscles of his forearms and the heavy signet ring on his finger.

I pulled a chair up across from the trembling IT technician, sitting down slowly while resting a thick manila folder on the table.

Arthur flinched as Luca's cold grey eyes locked onto him with terrifying intensity.

You made a very poor career choice tonight, Arthur, Luca began, his voice dangerously low and smooth.

You thought you could slip into my home under cover of darkness and recover the master ledger before my board meeting.

I... I didn't know what I was doing, Arthur stammered, his voice cracking with panic.

Miss Bellini... Miss Bellini forced me into it! She said if I didn't help her secure the backup drives, she would expose my gambling debts to the federal authorities!

Everyone always claims they were forced by someone else, Luca noted calmly, tapping his pen against the table.

Let's talk about Patricia Wells, your senior partner at the Evanston agency.

Where is she hiding right now?

Arthur swallowed hard, sweat beading heavily on his forehead.

She... she has a secondary offshore office in a warehouse near the Chicago River.

That's where the encrypted master servers are kept.

That's where all the blackmail files and offshore shell company routing numbers are mirrored.

I reached across the table, sliding a digital tablet toward Arthur's trembling hands.

Unlock the terminal access codes for those mirror servers right now, I instructed quietly.

If you cooperate fully and hand over the encryption keys, Mr. Moretti will ensure your federal sentence is recommended for probation rather than maximum security.

Arthur looked between me and Luca, realizing he had no other way out.

With shaking fingers, he typed out a long, complex alphanumeric decryption string onto the tablet screen, unlocking the secure portal to the Evanston agency's hidden servers.

The screen flashed green, displaying a complete directory of every illegal transaction, extortion file, and shell company name.

Luca looked down at the tablet, a grim, satisfied smile touching the corners of his lips.

Thank you, Arthur, Luca said softly, signaling the guards behind him.

May you like

Take him down to the medical wing for observation, then prep the transport teams.

We are going to pay Mrs. Wells a very personal visit before dawn.
