Chapter 11 - The Fall of the Shadow King

The first gunshot echoed off the reinforced ballistic glass of the boardroom, shattering an ornamental crystal decanter on the sideboard into thousands of glittering fragments.
Directors and board members screamed in sheer terror, diving beneath the cherrywood conference table as Vance’s four mercenaries drew their concealed automatic weapons.
Luca DeMarco reacted with the lethal, instinctual speed of a warrior born into generational conflict.
He grabbed the heavy cherrywood armchair beside him, hurling it with tremendous force across the table into the chest of Vance's lead operative.
The mercenary stumbled backward under the impact, his first burst of gunfire tearing into the acoustical ceiling tiles and showering the room with white plaster dust.
Luca drew his custom nine-millimeter tactical sidearm, firing two center-mass rounds that neutralized the first gunman instantly.
Grace did not freeze; she dropped beneath the rim of the heavy conference table, clutching the red folder against her body to shield the evidence.
The two FBI tactical agents stationed at the door returned fire, their rifles barking in disciplined semi-automatic cadences.
Vance’s second operative was dropped near the doorway, while the remaining two mercenaries took cover behind the boardroom’s marble media wall, pinning down the federal agents with suppressive fire.
Roland Vance stood behind his gunmen, his face twisted in venomous desperation as he twisted the gold head of his walking cane.
A four-inch titanium blade slid from the tip of the cane with a sharp mechanical click.
"Kill the girl and take the folder!" Vance roared, pointing the blade toward the far end of the conference table.
"No one leaves this room alive with those manifests!"
Suddenly, the service entrance near the boardroom pantry was kicked open with a violent, splintering crash.
A disheveled, bleeding figure burst into the room, wielding a heavy revolver with shaking, blood-soaked hands.
It was Daniel Russo.
Daniel looked like a condemned man who had clawed his way out of the grave, his eyes wild and bloodshot with psychotic desperation.
"Vance!" Daniel screamed, his voice raw with hoarse, broken rage.
"You took everything from me! You destroyed my family! You set me up to take the fall for the federal indictments!"
Roland Vance spun around, his eyes widening in shock as he saw his former puppet standing in the doorway with a gun.
"Daniel, you fool! Put that weapon down!" Vance barked, attempting to raise his blade.
Daniel Russo did not hesitate; he pulled the trigger of his revolver, sending a heavy-caliber hollow-point round straight through the shoulder of Vance's third mercenary.
The wounded operative spun around and returned fire on reflex, discharging three rapid rounds into Daniel Russo’s chest.
Daniel gasped, his body jolting violently as the bullets tore through his silk shirt, but the momentum of his rage kept him on his feet.
Daniel fired a second shot, the bullet striking Roland Vance directly in the right knee.
Vance let out a high-pitched, agonized scream as his joint shattered, his titanium-bladed cane flying from his grasp as he collapsed heavily onto the Persian rug.
Taking advantage of the distraction, Luca broke cover from behind the table, clearing the distance in three explosive strides.
He brought the steel slide of his weapon down across the jaw of the final standing mercenary, knocking him unconscious onto the floor.
The FBI tactical team breached the room in force, their weapons trained on the fallen figures as red laser dots danced across the walls.
"Federal agents! Drop all weapons and stay on the floor!" the lead agent roared, securing the perimeter within seconds.
The gunfight had lasted less than forty-five seconds, but the executive boardroom was transformed into a field of smoke, blood, and broken glass.
Grace crawled out from beneath the mahogany table, her eyes widening in horror as she saw her father lying on his back near the pantry door.
Daniel was gasping for air, bright crimson blood foaming at the corners of his mouth as his hands clutched his perforated chest.
Grace hesitated for a single heartbeat before running across the room and dropping to her knees beside him.
She pressed her overcoat against his bleeding chest, trying desperately to stem the fatal hemorrhage.
"Daniel... stay still, the paramedics are coming," Grace said, her voice shaking with an overwhelming flood of conflicting emotions.
Daniel looked up at her through fading, misty eyes, his trembling fingers reaching out to lightly touch the sleeve of her coat.
"Grace..." Daniel whispered, blood rattling in his throat with every agonizing breath.
"I... I was a weak man... a coward..."
"Your mother... Elaine... was always ten times the leader I could ever pretend to be..."
"I thought if I had Vance's power... I could make you respect me... make this city fear me..."
"Instead... I became his dog..."
Tears slipped down Grace’s cheeks, washing away years of bitter resentment and fear in the presence of death.
"Why didn't you just let me go, Daniel?" she wept softly.
"Why did you try to break my wrist?"
Daniel’s eyes filled with bitter, dying tears.
"Because I knew... if Vance realized you held the red file... he would hunt you to the ends of the earth..."
"I thought if I forced you to sign the proxy... I could take the bullet instead of you..."
"I am sorry, Grace... I am so sorry for what I became..."
Daniel’s fingers lost their strength, slipping from her sleeve and falling limply onto the floor.
His final breath rattled through his chest, his eyes staring blankly at the ceiling tiles above.
Daniel Russo was dead.
Behind them, Roland Vance was writhing on the carpet, clutching his shattered knee while federal agents snapped heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.
"You think this is over, DeMarco?" Vance hissed through clenched teeth, glaring up at Luca.
"My offshore trusts will post bail before midnight! I will tie this company up in litigation for fifty years!"
Luca walked over to the fallen oligarch, looking down at him with cold, merciless finality.
"You won't be posting bail, Roland," Luca said, stepping on the shattered cane blade and snapping the titanium steel with his heel.
"Arthur Pendelton didn't just preserve the red file before he died."
"He uploaded thirty years of your tax evasion, murder contracts, and trafficking manifests to the Eastern District Federal Grand Jury."
"The Attorney General signed your arrest warrant twenty minutes ago."
"You will spend the rest of your miserable life in a maximum-security cell in Florence, Colorado."
The federal agents hauled Vance to his feet, dragging the screaming, cursing oligarch out of the boardroom and down the hallway into custody.
The silence that settled over the room was absolute, broken only by the distant wail of police sirens rising from the streets below.
Luca walked back over to Grace, who was still kneeling beside her father's body, her hands stained with blood.
He knelt beside her, gently wrapping his arm around her trembling shoulders and pulling her against his chest.
"It's over, Grace," Luca whispered softly into her hair.
