Chapter 9 - The Blood Money Manifest

The polished marble corridors outside Courtroom 4B were lined with reporters and court spectators who had caught wind of the high-stakes confrontation.

Four DeMarco security officers formed a protective diamond around Grace, Luca, and their litigator, shielding them from the flashing cameras.

As they reached the private elevator vestibule, Daniel Russo came running around the corner, disheveled and wheezing like an animal in a trap.

"Grace! Stop! You must listen to me for one minute!" Daniel pleaded, his voice cracking as he lunged forward.

Two DeMarco guards stepped into his path, their heavy hands slamming against Daniel’s chest and driving him backward against the granite wall.

"Take another step toward her and I will have the marshals execute that restraining order in handcuffs," Luca warned, his dark eyes freezing Daniel in place.

Grace raised her hand, signaling the guards to step aside slightly so she could look at her father.

She walked over to him, stopping three feet away, looking at the man who had controlled her life through fear for over two decades.

"You lost, Daniel," Grace said softly, her voice carrying none of the trembling fear she had felt in the kitchen the previous night.

"You tried to forge medical documents to steal my mother's life work."

"You don't understand what you've done, Grace!" Daniel cried out, tears of genuine panic streaming down his bruised cheeks.

"You think this was about me wanting power? You think I wanted Carter Freight for myself?"

"Roland Vance is outside this building right now!"

"He doesn't care about a Delaware probate ruling! He doesn't care about a judge's gavel!"

"He holds a forty-percent chattel mortgage on the core assets of Carter Freight signed by your grandfather Thomas thirty years ago!"

"When Thomas needed fifty million dollars to survive the Atlantic port strikes, he took the cash from Vance's offshore syndicate!"

"If Vance doesn't get control of those shipping docks today, he will liquidate that mortgage and bankrupt Carter Freight before noon!"

"And when the company goes under, Vance will butcher every single person associated with our family!"

Grace looked at her father with profound, sorrowful pity.

She reached into the scarlet folder held in her hands and pulled out a thin, yellowed sheet of carbon-copy paper bearing Thomas Carter’s signature.

"My mother knew all about Grandfather's debt to Vance, Daniel," Grace revealed, holding the document before his bulging eyes.

"She spent fifteen years tracing every dollar Vance channeled through his offshore front companies in the Cayman Islands."

"And do you know what she discovered, Daniel?"

Daniel shook his head slowly, his jaw hanging slack.

"Roland Vance never loaned fifty million dollars to Thomas Carter," Grace said, each word landing like an anvil.

"The money Vance provided was stolen from the International Longshoremen's Pension Fund."

"Vance used my grandfather to launder union pension money into commercial shipping terminals."

"My mother didn't hide the company from Vance because she owed him a debt."

"She hid the company because she spent two decades gathering the banking receipts, container manifests, and SWIFT transfer codes to prove his entire empire is a criminal enterprise."

"Everything is here, Daniel."

"The bank accounts in Zurich."

"The dummy corporations in Panama."

"The container numbers used to smuggle high-grade contraband through Terminal Nine."

"And the promissory notes proving that the seventy million dollars you owed Vance in Macau was actually an illegal bribe paid to let his contractors operate unmonitored."

Daniel’s knees gave out, and he slid down the cold granite wall until he was sitting on the marble floor like a broken beggar.

"She... she knew about the Macau lines?" Daniel stammered, covering his face with trembling hands.

"My mother knew everything, Daniel," Grace whispered, looking down at him.

"She stayed with you because your violent reputation kept Vance’s hit squads from kicking down our front door before she could finish building this file."

"You thought you were the predator using my mother’s company to build your underworld empire."

"In reality, my mother used your monstrous ego as a human shield to keep Roland Vance at bay until I was old enough to destroy him."

Daniel looked up, his face twisted in horror.

"Grace... please... tell Vance I tried... don't let him kill me..."

Grace took a slow, deep breath, stepping back into the protective circle beside Luca DeMarco.

"You chose to make a pact with Roland Vance, Daniel."

"Now you will face him alone."

Luca signaled his security team, and the elevator doors slid open smoothly.

"United States Marshals and the FBI Financial Crimes Division are waiting for us on the fortieth floor of Carter Freight Tower," Luca said to Grace as they stepped inside.

"The executive board meeting starts in forty minutes."

May you like

Grace nodded firmly, her fingers gripping the red file as the elevator plunged down toward the motorcade bay.

"Let's go finish what my mother started," Grace said.
