Chapter 10 - The Siege of Carter Freight Tower

Carter Freight Tower rose fifty-five stories above the financial district, its dark reflective glass dominating the coastal skyline.
The fortieth floor housed the executive boardroom—a massive expanse of polished cherrywood, panoramic ballistic windows, and leather seating.
At nine-fifty AM, the boardroom was filled with twenty-two nervous corporate directors, maritime union representatives, and legal counsels.
The atmosphere was suffocating with panic; rumors of the violent shootout on the suspension bridge had already leaked across financial wires.
At the head of the conference table, sitting in the chairman’s leather seat with an air of untouchable royal entitlement, was Roland Vance.
The silver-haired shadow king had discarded his coat, wearing an immaculate three-piece pinstripe suit, his gold-headed cane resting across the table.
Behind him stood four heavily armed private security operatives dressed in tactical suits, their weapons concealed beneath tailored blazers.
The remaining board members sat in terrified silence, knowing that Vance had already bought off three senior vice presidents with offshore accounts.
"Gentlemen, we have reached nine-fifty-five AM," Roland Vance announced, his smooth, resonant voice filling the room with aristocratic menace.
"Daniel Russo has failed to appear, and his emergency petition in the Delaware court has been rendered irrelevant by events."
"Under the provisions of the 1994 Maritime Chattel Indenture executed by Thomas Carter, the primary collateral defaults to Vance Capital Holdings today."
"I am formally demanding the immediate ratification of my appointment as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer."
"If anyone at this table wishes to object, I suggest you consider the safety of your cargo fleets and your families before casting a vote."
Several older board members exchanged frightened glances, their hands trembling as they prepared to surrender the company to the predator.
Before the corporate secretary could call for the initial roll call, the heavy frosted-glass doors of the boardroom swung open with tremendous force.
Two tactical agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, wearing dark windbreakers with yellow lettering, secured the perimeter of the doorway.
Following them into the room walked Grace Carter, radiating unshakeable poise and regal authority, flanked by Luca DeMarco.
Luca stepped into the center of the boardroom with his hands relaxed at his sides, his dark eyes instantly locking onto Roland Vance.
A ripple of shock traveled through the assembled directors; many had assumed Grace had perished in the violent ambush hours earlier.
Roland Vance did not flinch, though a dangerous, venomous tightening appeared around the corners of his pale eyes.
"Ah, Miss Carter," Vance said smoothly, leaning back in the chairman’s chair.
"I must commend your resilience; surviving a morning on the river is no small feat."
"However, this is a meeting of corporate directors, not a family reunion."
"You hold no standing in this room without a recognized corporate title."
Grace walked straight down the length of the cherrywood table, stopping directly opposite Vance at the far end of the boardroom.
She set the red presentation folder down on the polished wood with a heavy, deliberate snap that echoed off the glass walls.
"You are sitting in my mother's chair, Mr. Vance," Grace said, her voice freezing the temperature in the room.
"And you are trespassing on private corporate property."
Vance let out a dry, condescending chuckle, tapping his gold cane against the table.
"Your mother was an obstinate woman who mistook legal stalling for victory, Grace."
"I hold an unpaid chattel mortgage of fifty million dollars plus thirty years of compounding interest against this company's assets."
"Unless you have eighty-five million dollars in liquid cash to wire into my Swiss account right now, Carter Freight belongs to me."
Luca DeMarco stepped forward, resting both hands on the table and leaning across toward Vance with a lethal smile.
"That mortgage was rendered null and void forty-eight hours ago, Roland," Luca stated with chilling certainty.
Vance’s arrogant smile flickered and died.
"On what legal grounds?" Vance sneered.
Grace opened the red folder, turning to a sealed financial escrow deed bearing the official watermark of the Bank of International Settlements.
"Twenty years ago, my mother Elaine Carter discovered that you were using the mortgage to launder stolen pension funds," Grace explained.
"She did not challenge you openly because she knew you would assassinate our board members."
"Instead, she formed an anonymous maritime syndicate funded jointly by Carter Freight’s reserve revenues and Anthony DeMarco’s harbor shipping lines."
"That syndicate purchased the underlying debt bonds from the European secondary market sixteen years ago."
"My mother paid off your mortgage in full, Mr. Vance."
"Every single penny of the fifty million dollars was deposited into an untouchable court-supervised escrow trust in Geneva."
"The only reason you believed the debt was still outstanding is because Arthur Pendelton maintained a dummy offshore reporting ledger to keep you pacified."
"You don't own forty percent of Carter Freight, Roland."
"You own zero percent."
"And the eighty-five million dollars you thought you were collecting today has already been seized by the Department of Justice as proceeds of criminal racketeering."
The color drained from Roland Vance’s face, turning his aristocratic features into a grotesque mask of murderous rage.
He pushed himself up from the chairman’s seat, his hand tightening around the gold handle of his cane.
"You think a piece of paper from a dead woman and a DeMarco thug can strip me of my empire?" Vance hissed, his voice dropping into a guttural growl.
"I built the shipping lanes on this coast with blood and iron long before your father bought his first vessel, Luca!"
"I will burn every dock from here to Halifax before I let this girl sit in that chair!"

Behind Vance, his lead tactical operative reached inside his blazer, clearing the holster of an automatic sidearm.
"Cover the doors!" Luca shouted, drawing his weapon as the boardroom shattered into absolute, chaotic violence.
