Chapter 13 - An Empire Reimagined

The smell of caramelized garlic, roasting rosemary chicken, and fresh yeast bread filled the grand kitchen of the Romano estate.

It was a scent that had never existed in the cold, marble halls of the manor during Arthur’s youth.

In those days, French chefs in starched white hats prepared emotionless, multi-course dishes that were eaten in stony silence beneath portraits of dead ancestors.

Now, the heavy copper pots were bubbling on the industrial Viking range, and classical Italian jazz played softly from a portable speaker on the counter.

Chloe stood at the central island, wearing an oversized grey sweater and an apron dusted with white flour.

She expertly kneaded sourdough on a heavy maple block, her cheeks flushed with the heat of the ovens.

In a high-tech motorized bassinet near the kitchen table, little Alexander cooed softly, batting his tiny hands at a dangling plush bear.

Toby sat at the counter with an open laptop, surrounded by high-resolution blueprints and 3D architectural renderings.

“Look at this cantilevered glass ceiling for the South Side center, Chlo,” Toby said excitedly, spinning the laptop screen toward her.

“The structural engineers approved the load yesterday.”

“The community kitchen will get twelve hours of natural sunlight every single day.”

Chloe wiped a streak of flour from her cheek with the back of her forearm, smiling warmly at her brother.

“Mom and Dad would be so proud of you, Toby.”

“You took something that burned and turned it into a sanctuary for the whole neighborhood.”

Toby’s expression softened, his fingers tapping gently on the keyboard.

“Arthur did that, Chloe.”

“He signed the foundation charters without taking a single penny of equity.”

“The city council tried to hold up the zoning permits last week, and Arthur had the deputy mayor removed from office by lunchtime.”

The kitchen door swung open, and Arthur stepped inside.

He had shed his coat, tie, and shoulder holster in the foyer, wearing only his crisp white shirt with the top three buttons undone and the sleeves rolled to his elbows.

The cold, terrifying warlord from the Goose Island brewery had vanished completely.

He walked straight to the bassinet, bending his tall frame to scoop Alexander into his massive arms.

The baby nestled instantly against Arthur’s broad chest, blowing small bubbles against his father’s collarbone.

“Look who’s awake,” Arthur murmured, his deep voice dropping into that gentle, velvet register.

He kissed Alexander’s soft temple, then crossed the kitchen floor to stand behind Chloe.

He wrapped his free arm around her waist, pulling her back against his chest and burying his face into her hair.

Chloe leaned her head back onto his shoulder, smiling as she felt his warm breath against her ear.

“You’re late,” she chided playfully.

“It’s seven-fifteen.”

“Traffic near the river was unusually congested,” Arthur lied smoothly, kissing the slope of her neck.

“Something smells incredible, little bird.”

“Rosemary roasted chicken, whipped potatoes, and freshly baked crusty bread,” she announced proudly, dusting her hands off over the sink.

“A real meal, not those tiny portions of foam your catering staff tries to feed you.”

Arthur chuckled, a deep, rumbling sound that made Alexander giggle against his shoulder.

“I haven't eaten foam since the night you threw a cast-iron skillet at my face.”

“I didn't throw it,” Chloe countered, turning in his embrace to face him.

“I raised it with clear defensive intent against an armed trespasser.”

Arthur looked down at her hazel eyes, his gaze overflowing with an intense, unyielding devotion that made her breath catch.

He reached out, his thumb gently wiping away a fleck of white flour from the tip of her nose.

“You saved my life three times, Chloe.”

“Once with a skillet, once with a warning at the altar, and every single day since you brought our son into this house.”

Toby cleared his throat loudly from the island counter, closing his laptop with an exaggerated snap.

“All right, if you two are going to start making out over the gravy, I am taking my sketches to the dining room.”

Chloe laughed, her face turning pink as Toby grabbed his papers and beat a hasty retreat down the hall.

Arthur didn't let go of her waist.

He leaned down and kissed her softly, his lips lingering against hers with infinite patience.

When he pulled back, his eyes were serious, dark, and filled with a profound promise.

“The foundation paperwork was finalized this afternoon, Chloe.”

“The entire southern quarter is deeded under your name and Toby’s.”

“If anything ever happens to me, if the streets ever turn wild again, you and Alexander have an unassailable fortress that no mob court can touch.”

Chloe placed her hand flat against his chest, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heart beneath the cotton shirt.

“Nothing is going to happen to you, Arthur.”

“Because you aren't fighting for crowns anymore.”

“You’re fighting to come home to this table.”

Arthur looked at his wife, then down at the son resting safely in the crook of his arm.

May you like

“To this table,” Arthur agreed, his voice rough with emotion.

“Always.”
