Chapter 9 - Shadows in the Nursery

Four months later, the bitter Chicago winter had transformed into the gentle thaw of early spring.
The Romano estate was bustling with quiet, efficient activity.
On the second floor of the east wing, sunlight poured through massive bay windows into a masterfully renovated nursery.
The walls were painted a warm, soothing sage green, lined with handcrafted white oak bookshelves and soft wool rugs.
A grand, custom-built crib carved from dark walnut stood in the center of the room beneath a crystal mobile of stars and moons.
Chloe stood near the window, wearing a flowing blush-pink maternity gown that accommodated her now heavily swollen nine-month belly.
She rested both hands under the heavy curve, swaying gently to the soft classical melody playing from the antique record player.
Every movement had become an effort, her lower back aching continuously under the weight of their growing child.
The bedroom door opened quietly, and Arthur entered, shedding his dark overcoat.
He looked tired from a twelve-hour meeting with the transatlantic shipping directors, but the moment his gaze found Chloe, the tension evaporated from his broad shoulders.
He crossed the room silently, wrapping his arms around her from behind.
He rested his chin against the crook of her neck, inhaling her familiar vanilla scent while his large hands spread wide over her taut stomach.
“Dr. Julian told me you spent two hours on your feet organizing the baby clothes,” Arthur chided softly, his lips pressing against her ear.
“I gave explicit orders for you to remain on bed rest this week.”
Chloe laughed softly, leaning her full weight back against his solid chest.
“Your doctors are paranoid, Arthur.”
“If I stay in that bed for another hour, my legs will turn to stone.”
“Besides, look at these miniature woolen booties Mrs. Higgins knitted.”
She picked up a pair of tiny cream-colored booties from the changing table, turning them in her fingers with pure delight.
Arthur smiled, kissing the slope of her shoulder.
“He will probably kick them off in three seconds, just like his mother kicks off the duvet every night.”
Suddenly, Chloe’s breath caught in her throat.
Her body stiffened against him.
Her hands clamped down hard over his forearms as a sharp, intense contraction rippled through her entire abdomen.
“Arthur...” she gasped, her knuckles turning white.
Arthur’s playful demeanor vanished in a fraction of a second.
He took her weight effortlessly, supporting her before her knees could buckle.
“Is it a contraction?”
Chloe closed her eyes, breathing deeply through her nose as Dr. Julian had taught her.
The pain rose to an excruciating peak before slowly ebbing away after forty-five agonizing seconds.
She opened her eyes, sweat beading along her hairline.
“My water just broke,” she whispered, looking down at the damp spot spreading across the hem of her gown.
Arthur scooped her into his arms without a word, carrying her toward the master suite where the medical team was already stationed.
“Leo!” Arthur bellowed, his voice echoing through the long corridors like a war horn.
“Get Julian into the private delivery suite right now!”
“The baby is coming!”
Within sixty seconds, the quiet estate turned into an orchestrated command center.
Nurses in sterile scrubs moved swiftly down the halls, wheeling monitoring equipment and neonatal incubators into the prepared birthing room.
Arthur laid Chloe down onto the elevated medical bed, never once letting go of her trembling hand.
Dr. Julian rushed into the room, snapping on latex gloves while checking the monitors.
“Dilation is already at six centimeters, Arthur,” Julian announced after a swift examination.
“This labor is progressing very rapidly, much faster than normal for a first pregnancy.”
Chloe let out another sharp cry as the next wave of contractions hit her with brutal intensity.
Tears leaked from the corners of her eyes, her fingernails digging deep into Arthur’s palm, drawing faint crescents of blood.
Arthur didn't flinch.
He leaned down, pressing his forehead against hers, his voice steady, low, and unbreakable.
“Look at me, little bird.”
Chloe forced her tear-blurred eyes open, locking onto his fierce, unwavering gaze.
“I am right here with you.”
“You fought through an assassination, through a blizzard, through an entire war for this child.”
“You are the strongest woman in this city, Chloe.”
“Breathe with me.”
She breathed in synchronization with his deep chest, grounding herself in his immense strength.
Hours blurred into a haze of sweat, agony, and desperate prayers.
Outside, the spring sky turned from twilight purple to inky black, a warm rain tapping against the bulletproof glass of the manor windows.
Down in the security hub, Leo Barnes watched forty high-definition surveillance feeds.
Suddenly, sensor three on the southern perimeter wall flashed yellow.
Leo leaned forward, zooming in on the dense tree line bordering the estate grounds.
A black delivery van with forged utility markings was idling near the secondary electrical transformer.
Leo tapped his headset immediately.
“Bravo team, sweep the south transformer station immediately, we have an unauthorized perimeter breach.”
Before the guards could respond, the master power grid of the Romano estate abruptly shut off.
The room plunged into pitch darkness.
Two seconds later, the estate’s heavy diesel backup generators kicked on with a low, vibrating hum, casting the rooms in dim emergency red light.
Down in the delivery suite, the sudden loss of primary power caused the medical monitors to reboot with a piercing series of warning tones.
Dr. Julian looked up in alarm as Chloe let out an agonizing, final push.
“The umbilical cord is wrapped around the infant's shoulder, Arthur!” Julian shouted over the sound of the alarms.
“I need steady light on the surgical field right now!”
At that precise moment, the glass of the outer corridor shattered violently.
Gunfire erupted on the ground floor.

A desperate remnant of the Croft syndicate’s hired guns had bypassed the outer gates during the blackout, launching a suicidal last strike to eliminate the Romano heir before he drew his first breath.
Arthur stood frozen between two impossible duties: the woman screaming in agony on the bed, and the killers storming up the stairs toward his family.
