Chapter 5 - The Freight Yard Ambush

Rain hammered relentlessly against the rusted corrugated roofs of the Croft freight yard on the edge of Lake Michigan.
Floodlights cast harsh, yellow halos through the freezing fog.
Inside Warehouse Four, nineteen-year-old Toby Henderson was tied to a rusted steel chair in the center of the concrete floor.
His face was swollen, his lip split wide open, and blood dripped from his chin onto his torn flannel shirt.
Standing over him was Malcolm Croft, impeccably dressed in a dry cashmere coat, swirling amber bourbon in a lowball glass.
Behind him stood Daniel Croft, holding a heavy iron tire iron, looking eagerly toward the locked bay doors.
“Your sister has terrible timing, boy,” Malcolm said smoothly, taking a slow sip of his drink.
“If she had stayed in her greasy kitchen for another ten minutes, Arthur Romano would be lying on a mortuary slab.”
“Vivien would be signing the joint territory declaration.”
“And you would still have a roof over your head.”
Toby spat a mouthful of blood onto Malcolm’s expensive leather shoes.
“Go to hell, you old bastard.”
Daniel Croft stepped forward, his face twisting with rage, and swung the tire iron toward Toby’s ribs.
Before the iron could make contact, a single sharp gunshot echoed through the cavernous warehouse.
The bullet tore through Daniel’s wrist, shattering the bone and sending the tire iron clattering across the floor.
Daniel shrieked in agony, clutching his ruined arm as blood sprayed across the concrete.
“Sniper!” a Croft guard screamed from the catwalk overhead.
Every floodlight inside the warehouse suddenly shattered in a synchronized wave of gunfire.
Darkness swallowed the building whole.
The only illumination came from the strobing muzzle flashes of automatic rifles firing blindly into the shadows.
Footsteps moved across the high steel beams with supernatural speed and silence.
A body fell from the third-story catwalk, hitting a stack of wooden crates with a sickening crunch.
“Form a perimeter around the old man!” a guard captain barked into his radio.
“He’s inside the building!”
Out of the blackness, Arthur Romano emerged like a phantom born of gunpowder and spite.
He fired his shotgun twice, blasting through the reinforced doors of the security booth and neutralizing two gunmen before they could raise their scopes.
He advanced across the concrete, every shot deliberate, ruthless, and terrifyingly precise.
Romano soldiers in night-vision gear breached the side exits, cutting off every escape route with suppressing fire.
Leo Barnes swept through the eastern corridor, clearing the catwalks with surgical precision.
In less than ninety seconds, eight Croft mercenaries lay dead or incapacitated on the floor.
Malcolm Croft backed away toward the emergency freight elevator, his calm demeanor entirely shattered.
“Romano!” Malcolm shouted, his voice cracking with genuine panic.
“You kill me here, and the Commission will wipe your entire bloodline off the map!”
Arthur stepped into the pale beam of an emergency backup light.
His face was splattered with rain and gunpowder residue.
His eyes were as cold as the ice forming on the lake outside.
He didn't speak.
He raised his Kimber .45 and fired a single round directly through Malcolm Croft’s right knee.
The old mob patriarch collapsed onto the wet floor with a pathetic, agonizing howl.
Arthur walked slowly toward Toby, who was looking up at him with wide, disbelieving eyes.
Arthur produced a combat blade, severed the zip-ties binding the boy’s wrists, and hauled him to his feet.
“Can you walk, kid?” Arthur asked calmly.
Toby coughed, rubbing his raw wrists.
“Are you... are you the guy who broke our kitchen lock?”
Arthur’s lips curled into a faint, grim smile.
“I am.”
“Chloe is safe in my clinic.”
“She sent me to fetch you.”
Arthur pushed Toby gently behind him toward Leo.
“Leo, escort the boy to the medical transport.”
“Get him checked for internal bleeding.”
“What about them?” Leo asked, gesturing toward the groaning Malcolm and the whimpering Daniel Croft on the floor.
Arthur turned his back on Toby, his pistol dropping to his side.
“Take Daniel alive to the basement cells.”
“I want him to explain every single detail of the poison plot on camera for the Five Families Commission.”
Arthur then stepped closer to Malcolm Croft, looking down at the bleeding patriarch with contempt.
“Where is Vivien?” Arthur demanded.
Malcolm glared up through gritted teeth, clutching his shattered leg.
“You think you won, Romano?”
“Vivien isn't at the penthouse.”
A sickening realization struck Arthur’s chest like a sledgehammer.
“What did you do, Malcolm?”
Malcolm began to cough out a wet, mocking laugh.
“You brought all your elite killers here to save this useless boy...”
“Who do you think was driving the ambulance that pulled up to your estate ten minutes ago?”
“Vivien doesn't need aconite to finish a job.”
“She went to your clinic to carve that bastard out of your little waitress’s belly herself.”
Arthur didn't even waste a bullet on the old man.
He turned and sprinted toward the armored SUV, the radio in his ear crackling with static.
“Leo! Radio the estate now!”
The radio hissed with panic, followed by the sound of heavy automatic gunfire erupting inside the Romano underground bunker.
Over the speaker, Dr. Julian Vane’s terrified voice screamed through the static:

“Arthur! The blast doors were breached from the service vents!”
“Vivien is in the trauma room!”
