Chapter 13 - The Waterfront Retaliation

By 2:00 PM, news of Anthony Bellini’s formal surrender had detonated like an earthquake across the city's criminal underworld.
Federal marshals had escorted the patriarch into the federal detention center under high-security suicide watch.
His signed, thirty-page sworn deposition laid bare forty years of extortion, bribery, and maritime smuggling routes.
At the Bellini family headquarters on Pier 42, the situation had turned into an armed fortress.
Luca sat behind his desk in the glass-walled executive office, flanked by Dominic Vance and Special Agent Marcus Cole.
Dozens of banker boxes filled with financial ledgers, corporate bonds, and shipping manifests were stacked against the walls.
Luca was signing asset forfeiture waivers with systematic, unhurried precision.
He was voluntarily transferring seventy million dollars in legitimate commercial holdings into an independent blind trust for Noah.
The remaining illegal operations were being formally handed over to the Department of Justice for liquidation.
Hannah sat on a leather sofa in the inner conference room, feeding Noah sliced pears from a plastic container.
The baby was laughing, clapping his hands together as Hannah made playful faces to keep him calm.
Agent Cole looked from the peaceful child to the hardened mafia boss signing away his life’s empire.
"You realize what this means for you, Bellini," Cole said, reviewing the latest waiver.
"Even with full cooperation and civil restitution, you’re looking at a five-to-seven-year term in a federal correctional facility."
Luca did not pause his pen.
"I know the law, Marcus."
"I broke it, and I will pay for it."
"My only condition is that Noah’s trust remains completely untouchable by both the government and the syndicate."
"And that Hannah Reed is named legal primary co-guardian with full physical custody until my sentence is served."
Hannah paused, her spoon hovering in mid-air as she looked through the glass partition at Luca.
She had expected him to assign Noah to an elite boarding school or a distant, wealthy relative.
Instead, he was entrusting the child’s entire life to the ordinary maid who had carried him through the mud.
A sudden sharp radio transmission squawked from Agent Cole’s shoulder mic.
"Cole, this is Perimeter Team Two!" an agent yelled over gunfire in the background.
"We have multiple unauthorized vehicles breaching the main gates of Pier 42!"
"Heavy automatic fire reported at the security checkpoint!"
Luca stood up instantly, slamming his pen onto the desk.
"Salieri," Luca said, his eyes narrowing into cold calculation.
"Don Salieri’s enforcers know the records are inside this building."
"If they burn the manifests, my father's confession loses half its corroborating evidence."
Victor Hale kicked open the conference room door, carrying two tactical shotguns and a Kevlar vest.
"They breached the lower loading bay, Luca!" Victor reported, throwing the vest to Luca.
"There are at least fifteen armed shooters moving up the freight elevators!"
Agent Cole drew his service weapon and keyed his radio.
"All federal units, Code Red! We need immediate SWAT reinforcement at Pier 42!"
The heavy glass windows overlooking the shipping yards suddenly shattered under a hail of high-caliber rifle fire.
Bullets chewed through the mahogany desks, tearing files and shattering computer monitors into sparks.
Hannah dropped to the floor instantly, covering Noah with her entire body behind the heavy steel support pillar.
The baby screamed in terror as drywall dust rained down over them like white ash.
"Hannah, crawl toward the interior vault!" Luca shouted, racking the slide of his shotgun and returning fire through the broken windows.
Victor Hale took position beside the doorframe, firing controlled double-taps down the long hallway.
Three armed men in black tactical gear collapsed on the linoleum outside, but more boots were pounding up the stairs.
The Salieri syndicate had mobilized an army to erase the Bellini evidence before the feds could secure it.
Agent Cole fired his sidearm until the slide locked back, reloading with practiced speed.
"We can't hold this floor!" Cole shouted over the deafening noise.
"The stairwells are compromised!"
"There is an emergency freight elevator connected directly to the private submarine slip beneath the pier," Luca yelled.
"It leads to a maintenance dock where our private launch is moored."
"Victor, get Hannah and Noah to the lower dock right now!"
Victor looked at Luca with deep concern.
"I'm not leaving you here alone, boss."
"That is an order, Victor!" Luca roared, his eyes blazing with protective fury.
"You swore an oath to protect this family!"
"Noah is the only family left!"
"Get them out of this building!"
Victor hesitated for half a second before turning to Hannah.
"On me, Hannah! Move!"
Hannah scooped Noah tight against her chest, keeping her head low as she scrambled across the glass-littered floor.
Luca stepped out into the hallway, firing his weapon to suppress the advancing gunmen, drawing their fire away from the service exit.
A bullet grazed Luca’s upper left shoulder, tearing through his suit coat and drawing a line of red blood.
He didn't even flinch.
He continued firing with lethal, mechanical precision, buying every precious second his son needed to escape.
Hannah looked back one last time as the heavy fire door closed between them.
She saw Luca standing tall amidst the smoke and shattered glass, an unbreakable shield between the underworld and the innocent life she carried.
Victor led Hannah down the metal spiral staircase toward the dark, echoing depths of the pier foundation.
The smell of salt water, diesel fuel, and damp creosote grew stronger with every step.
Behind them, the muffled explosions of flashbang grenades and heavy gunfire shook the concrete walls.
They reached the lower subterranean boat slip where a thirty-foot twin-engine patrol craft was moored to the wooden pilings.
The water below was black and churning with the incoming tide.
Suddenly, the service door behind them was kicked off its hinges.
Two Salieri enforcers stepped onto the catwalk above, their rifles leveled directly at the boat.
Before they could pull their triggers, a series of silenced gunshots cracked through the damp air from the shadows.
Both enforcers collapsed forward over the railing, splashing heavily into the dark water below.
Stepping out from behind the fuel tanks was an unexpected figure.
Anthony Bellini’s old personal driver, Frank Moretti, stood with a smoking pistol in his hand.
"Mr. Anthony told me to wait here in case you needed an extraction, Miss Reed," the old driver said calmly.
"Untie the lines!" Victor shouted, leaping onto the deck of the boat.
Hannah jumped onto the wooden deck, landing firmly on her good knee as she shielded Noah.
Frank hit the ignition switches, and the twin diesel engines roared to life with a deep, vibrating rumble.
The boat surged forward out of the underground slip, bursting through the wooden blast doors into the open harbor.
Behind them, black smoke was pouring out of the upper executive offices of Pier 42.
The waterfront empire of the Bellini family was burning against the gray afternoon sky.

Hannah looked down at Noah, whose tearful face was pressed against her sweater, safe from the bullets and the falling glass.
And in the distance, the sirens of thirty approaching federal police cruisers began to wail across the bay.
