Chapter 3 - The Federal Standoff on Route 9

The blinding glare of tactical halogen lights suddenly flooded the gravel clearing.

The two black SUVs formed a barricade across the access road, blocking any exit toward the highway.

Four armed men stepped into the wet light, their badges gleaming on their chest rigs.

Behind them walked a woman in a tailored dark trench coat holding a laminated judicial folder.

Special Agent Marcus Cole of the Federal Inter-Agency Task Force stepped forward.

His hand rested loosely on his sidearm holster, his eyes assessing Victor Hale and Anthony Bellini.

"Step away from the vehicle and keep your hands visible," Agent Cole announced over the rain.

Anthony Bellini did not flinch, his silver cane resting firmly on the wet gravel.

"You are outside your standard jurisdiction, Agent Cole," the patriarch said smoothly.

"This is a state family court matter being enforced under federal civil assistance," the woman in the trench coat countered.

She was Evelyn Drake, the regional supervisor for Child Protective Services assigned to federal jurisdiction cases.

"We have an active, signed court order authorizing the immediate protective custody of minor Noah Bellini," Drake declared.

Hannah stepped backward, pressing her back against the side of Anthony's heavy sedan.

Noah woke up from the harsh lights and began to wail, his small hands grasping at Hannah’s rain-soaked sweater.

"He is safe right here," Hannah said, her voice cutting through the tension.

"I am his primary caregiver."

Victor stepped between Hannah and the approaching agents, his hands open but his posture rigid.

"The child is not in danger," Victor stated calmly.

"You don't need eight weapons drawn on an infant, Cole."

"Stand down, Victor," Agent Cole replied coldly.

"We know who pays your salary, and we know about the operation hitting Bellini docks tonight."

A high-pitched tire screech ripped through the damp air down the main road.

A heavily armored black Mercedes sedan barreled around the bend, spraying gravel across the grass.

The car slid to a halt inches from the federal barricade, its engine roaring like a caged beast.

The driver’s side door slammed open.

Luca Bellini stepped out into the pouring rain.

He wore no coat over his tailored three-piece suit, his dark tie loosened at his throat.

His eyes locked onto Hannah and the baby first, then swung toward his father.

"Nobody touches that child," Luca commanded, his voice echoing off the pine trees.

Agent Cole turned his weapon halfway toward Luca.

"Luca Bellini, you are interfering with a court-ordered federal civil execution."

"Show me the warrant, Marcus," Luca demanded, walking straight toward the guns without flinching.

"I know every judge in this district, and no one issues an ex parte custody seizure at midnight without cause."

Evelyn Drake held up the laminated order.

"The petitioner demonstrated immediate flight risk and ongoing criminal association," Drake said.

"The order was signed by Judge Vance three hours ago."

Luca’s jaw clenched so tightly the muscles in his cheek twitched.

"Judge Vance is a personal appointee of the Vale foundation," Luca spat out.

He turned on his father, his eyes burning with betrayal.

"You knew about this, didn't you?" Luca shouted at Anthony.

"You knew Margaret Vale was alive."

"You knew she was coming for Noah."

Anthony Bellini did not look away from his son’s furious gaze.

"I knew Margaret Vale never died in that fire eight years ago," the old man confessed in a tired voice.

"I protected that secret because Elena begged me on her deathbed never to tell you."

Luca looked as if he had been struck across the face with an iron bar.

"Elena begged you?"

"She knew what her mother was capable of, Luca," Anthony said, his cane tapping the ground once.

"Margaret Vale didn't file this petition out of maternal grief."

"She filed it because she wants the trust fund Elena locked away before she died."

Agent Cole stepped closer, his boots splashing in the muddy puddles.

"Enough family history," Cole ordered firmly.

"Miss Reed, hand the infant over to Supervisor Drake right now."

"If you refuse, you will be arrested for felony obstruction of justice and harboring a minor."

Hannah looked at Agent Cole’s cold, bureaucratic eyes.

Then she looked at Supervisor Drake, who held out a sterile child-transport harness like a piece of cargo.

Then she looked at Luca, whose hands were trembling with restrained violence.

And she looked down at Noah, whose tear-streaked face was buried against her collarbone.

"No," Hannah said clearly.

The clearing went dead quiet except for the steady thrum of idling engines.

Agent Cole frowned, taken aback by the young maid’s defiance.

"Excuse me?" Cole snapped.

"I said no," Hannah repeated, stepping forward into the center of the lights.

"Luca Bellini signed a temporary medical guardianship authorization when I took this job."

"I have the notarized document in my digital records on my phone."

"By state law, I am legally responsible for this child’s medical and physical welfare until a hearing occurs."

Supervisor Drake narrowed her eyes.

"That private agreement is superseded by an ex parte court order, Miss Reed."

"Then arrest me," Hannah replied without blinking.

"Arrest me, but you will not rip this baby out of my arms on a dirt road in the freezing rain."

"He has a fever, he has been exposed to the weather, and his knee was nearly injured in the woods."

"If you want this child, we are going to a licensed hospital under joint guard."

Luca looked at Hannah, an expression of profound respect breaking through his fury.

Anthony Bellini allowed the faintest smirk to touch his weathered lips.

Agent Cole looked between the armed mafia enforcers and the trembling, stubborn maid holding the child.

He knew that attempting to pry the infant away by force would trigger a firefight right here on Route 9.

"Saint Jude County Hospital," Cole conceded through gritted teeth.

"The pediatric ward has secure rooms."

"We will escort the vehicle."

"And the moment we arrive, the child undergoes mandatory forensic intake."

"Agreed," Luca said, his eyes never leaving the baby.

Hannah climbed into the back of Anthony’s sedan, holding Noah against her chest as the doors locked shut.

The convoy pulled out onto the blacktop, flashing emergency lights painting the dark trees in pulses of red and blue.

The flight through the woods was over, but the war for Noah Bellini had only just begun.
