Chapter 14 - The Ashes of Havencrest

The autumn rain stopped by nightfall, leaving a thick, clinging mist hanging over the pine forests.

At Havencrest, the long driveway was completely deserted.

The iron gates hung loose on their hinges, scarred by the events of the previous twenty-four hours.

Inside the grand stone estate, the silence was suffocating.

Federal agents and state troopers had spent the afternoon cataloging and seizing the property as part of the asset forfeiture protocol.

By 9:00 PM, the government teams had departed, leaving the house empty and dark.

A single black town car pulled up to the front entrance and turned off its lamps.

Luca Bellini stepped out onto the damp flagstones.

His left arm was bound in a medical sling beneath a simple dark wool coat, his face bruised and pale.

Beside him stood Agent Marcus Cole, who had personally escorted Luca from the federal infirmary under temporary conditional release.

Luca had eighty-four hours before his formal arraignment and surrender to the federal detention facility.

He had asked for one final visit to Havencrest to retrieve Elena’s personal belongings and close the chapter on his past.

Another car arrived behind them, carrying Hannah, Victor, and Noah.

Hannah stepped out into the cool night air, looking up at the sprawling stone mansion where she had worked for three months.

It no longer looked like an untouchable castle of wealth and power.

It looked like a magnificent tomb built to house ghosts.

Luca walked up the wide stone stairs, pushing open the heavy mahogany front door that had clicked open twenty-four hours earlier.

The entrance foyer was dark, the marble floor bearing the dried muddy tracks of the tactical boots that had breached it.

Hannah followed him inside, holding Noah wrapped in a fresh white blanket.

Noah looked around the vast, echoing hall, his small fingers pointing toward the grand staircase.

"Da," Noah babbled softly, recognizing the room where he used to play.

Luca stopped at the foot of the stairs, a ragged sigh escaping his lips.

"Don't call this place home, little bird," Luca whispered to the baby.

"There was never any peace here."

Dominic Vance walked in behind them, carrying a small metal deed box.

"Luca," Dominic said gently.

"The transfer paperwork is fully executed."

"Havencrest and the surrounding three hundred acres of private woodland have been sold to the State Conservation Trust."

"The proceeds have been deposited directly into the pediatric medical foundation established in Elena’s name."

"By midnight tomorrow, this property becomes public parkland."

Luca nodded slowly, looking around the walls where portraits of old Bellini ancestors hung in gilded frames.

"Take the portraits down and burn them, Victor," Luca ordered calmly.

"Let nothing of our name remain in these halls."

Suddenly, the exterior floodlights of the estate flickered to life.

A low, rumbling sound echoed from the front driveway as three black sedans blocked the stone entrance.

Victor immediately drew his weapon, moving in front of Hannah and Noah.

"Salieri’s remaining capos," Victor growled.

"They followed us from the waterfront."

Agent Cole drew his federal sidearm and pulled out his radio.

"I have officers stationed two miles down the access road, but they’ll take four minutes to respond."

The front doors swung open slowly.

Walking through the entrance was not an army of hired hitmen.

It was Anthony Bellini.

The old patriarch wore his dark funeral suit, his ebony cane clicking rhythmically against the marble floor.

He was flanked by two elderly syndicate capos who looked more like retired grandfathers than ruthless mobsters.

Luca stepped forward, his eyes blazing with renewed disbelief.

"How are you out of federal custody, Father?" Luca demanded.

Agent Cole raised his weapon toward the patriarch, but Anthony held up a trembling hand.

"Lower your gun, Agent Cole," Anthony said, his voice quiet and completely devoid of arrogance.

"I did not escape."

"I suffered a severe cardiac arrhythmia in the holding cell three hours ago."

"The federal judge granted a four-hour compassionate release under federal marshal escort so that I could be transported to the university medical center."

Anthony gestured to the unmarked federal cruisers idling behind his sedans in the driveway.

"I asked the marshals to bring me here first, Luca."

"To say goodbye to this house."

"And to finish what should have been done twenty years ago."

The two elderly capos behind Anthony stepped forward, placing a heavy steel lockbox on the marble foyer table.

"What is that?" Luca asked.

"These are the original master ledgers of the Five Waterfront Syndicates," Anthony explained, looking at his son with weary sorrow.

"Don Salieri thought he could hunt you down to silence you."

"He didn't realize that I built the system he operates on."

"An hour ago, Frank Moretti and my loyalists seized Salieri’s private vault."

"Salieri is currently in custody in the Fourth District."

"His entire organization has collapsed."

"There is no one left to hunt you, Luca."

"There is no one left to threaten Noah."

Anthony turned his gaze toward Hannah, who was holding Noah tightly against her chest.

The old man walked slowly toward them, his cane tapping with a frail, hollow cadence.

He stopped three paces away, looking down at the baby’s wide, curious eyes.

"You were braver than any Bellini who ever lived, young lady," Anthony said to Hannah, his voice trembling with emotion.

"You ran through the black woods with nothing but your bare hands and your love for this child."

"You saved him from his own blood."

Anthony reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small velvet pouch.

He opened it, revealing a simple silver medallion bearing the engraved image of Saint Christopher, the patron saint of safe travels.

It was the only piece of jewelry Elena had brought with her when she married Luca.

Anthony held it out with shaking fingers.

Hannah hesitated, looking at Luca.

Luca gave her a slow, somber nod.

Hannah stepped forward and allowed Anthony to place the silver medallion into Noah’s small, clutching palm.

Noah wrapped his tiny fingers around the cool silver and looked up at the old man with an innocent, toothless smile.

A single tear fell from Anthony's pale eye, splashing onto the marble floor.

"Forgive me, little one," Anthony whispered.

The patriarch turned back toward the front doors, leaning heavily on his cane as the federal marshals stepped inside to escort him to the ambulance.

He did not look back at Havencrest.

He did not look back at his son.

He walked into the dark night, ready to face the judgment of the law and the end of his mortal life.

Behind him, the great house of Havencrest stood empty, stripped of its power, its fear, and its blood.

Luca turned to Hannah, his eyes finally finding the first glimmers of peace after thirty-six hours of unrelenting nightmare.

"Let us leave this place, Hannah," Luca said softly.

"We have a long road ahead of us."
