Chapter 4 - Summoning the Auditors and the Midnight Revelation

The Beverly Hills estate was fast asleep, the massive chandeliers dimmed to a soft amber glow, and the only sound echoing through the grand marble hallways was the distant hum of the security cameras.

I sat alone in the dim light of my private office, a cup of black coffee growing cold on the edge of the mahogany desk, surrounded by stacks of corporate tax returns and residential expense ledgers.

It was past midnight, but my mind was wired with an obsessive, relentless energy that refused to let me close my eyes.

At 9:00 PM, I had placed a direct, highly confidential phone call to Arthur Sterling, the senior partner at Sterling & Vance Forensic Accounting—one of the most ruthless and thorough auditing firms in the country.

I hadn't given him the full backstory about Rosa Martinez or nine-year-old Camila; I had simply told him that I suspected systemic financial irregularities within my residential management accounts and demanded an immediate, exhaustive sweep.

By 11:30 PM, Sterling and two of his top senior associates had arrived at the Beverly Hills estate through a private side entrance, carrying secure digital servers and encrypted scanning equipment.

Now, they were down in the estate’s secure basement archives, combing through five years of digital transactions, vendor invoices, and payroll ledgers with surgical precision.

I took a slow sip of the cold coffee, wincing slightly at the bitter taste, just as a soft, urgent knock echoed from the heavy oak doors of my office.

"Come in," I called out, my voice cutting cleanly through the silent room.

The door clicked open, and Arthur Sterling stepped inside, looking impeccably sharp despite the late hour, holding a thick leather folder and a secure corporate tablet in his hands.

He didn't look like a man delivering routine tax updates; his expression was grim, pale, and deeply unsettled—the look of an investigator who had just uncovered something far uglier than expected.

"Arthur," I greeted him, standing up from my executive chair. "Tell me you found something. Tell me how Harrison pulled this off."

Sterling walked over to the desk, placing the leather folder down onto the polished wood with a heavy, deliberate thud.

"Mr. Vance," Sterling began, his voice dropping into a professional, hushed register. "We’ve spent the last three hours tearing through the residential ledgers, specifically focusing on Mr. Harrison’s administrative tenure."

"And?" I pressed, leaning forward over the edge of the desk. "Did he siphon the funds into an offshore account? Did he use dummy vendor corporations?"

"He did use dummy vendor corporations," Sterling nodded slowly, tapping the screen of his tablet to bring up a series of complex corporate flowcharts and bank transfer receipts.

"For the past eighteen months, Harrison systematically diverted approximately forty thousand dollars per month from the residential maintenance budget into a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands."

I frowned, crossing my arms over my chest. "Forty thousand a month? That totals nearly eight hundred thousand dollars. That goes far beyond petty wage theft. That’s organized corporate fraud."

"It gets worse, sir," Sterling said, his eyes locking onto mine with a steady, unblinking intensity. "When we traced the ultimate beneficiary of that Cayman Islands shell company—the entity holding the master signing rights—we didn't find Harrison’s name."

A cold shiver ran down my spine, the ambient temperature of the office seeming to drop ten degrees in a matter of seconds.

"Whose name did you find, Arthur?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

Sterling slid a single printed bank document across the desk toward my fingertips.

"The ultimate beneficiary, the person who authorized the initial creation of the shell company five years ago and continued to collect quarterly dividend payouts from the diverted residential funds..."

He paused, swallowing hard before delivering the final blow.

"...was your younger brother, Julian Vance."
