Chapter 7 - The Malibu Mansion at Dawn and the Awakening of a Parasite

The interior of Julian’s Malibu estate was a shrine to modern excess and superficial luxury, smelling faintly of expensive French cologne, ocean salt, and burnt espresso beans.

Immaculate white Italian tile stretched across the expansive foyer, leading toward a sunken living room that offered an unobstructed, panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean crashing against the private beach below.

Expensive contemporary art hung from the walls—canvases splattered with chaotic bursts of paint that cost more than a suburban home, purchased with funds diverted from my residential maintenance budget.

"Hello?" a groggy, irritated voice echoed down the sweeping architectural staircase from the second-floor master suite.

"Who the hell is downstairs at six in the morning? Housekeeping doesn't arrive until eight."

Footsteps padded softly against the hardwood stairs, and a moment later, Julian Vance appeared on the landing.

He wore a silk designer bathrobe tied loosely around his waist, his blonde hair slightly tousled from sleep, holding an empty ceramic coffee mug in his hand as he rubbed the sleep from his eyes.

At thirty-eight years old, Julian still possessed the youthful, charismatic charm that had always allowed him to talk his way out of trouble, though the soft lines of his face hinted at years of unchecked indulgence.

He looked down into the foyer, expecting to see a bewildered maid or a courier service delivery, only to freeze dead in his tracks when he saw me standing by the front entrance.

His hand tightened around the coffee mug, his eyes widening for a single, panicked fraction of a second before he quickly smoothed his expression into a welcoming, nonchalant smile.

"Well, look who decided to grace the Pacific Coast with his presence before sunrise," Julian chuckled lightly, descending the stairs with practiced ease.

"To what do I owe the extreme honor of this early morning visit, big brother? Did the Beverly Hills mansion run out of imported organic coffee beans, or did the global logistics market crash overnight?"

I didn't smile. I didn't move an inch. I stood like a granite statue at the foot of the stairs, my eyes locked onto his face with a chilling, deadened intensity.

Julian reached the bottom step, taking a sip from his empty mug before realizing the terrifying void of warmth radiating from my posture.

His casual smile finally faltered, replaced by a twitching hesitation in the corner of his mouth. "Uh... Julian? Is everything alright? You look like you've seen a ghost."

"Put the mug down, Julian," I said, my voice cutting through the silent foyer like a razor-sharp scalpel.

The casual lightness vanished entirely from his face. He set the ceramic mug down onto a nearby marble side table with a sharp clack.

"What is this about?" he asked defensively, his voice rising in pitch as he crossed his arms over his silk bathrobe. "You're scaring me. If this is about the loan repayment we discussed last month, I told you my tech venture is about to secure a major venture capital round—"

"Stop talking about tech ventures, Julian," I interrupted, my voice dropping into a low, lethal register that made him flinch.

I lifted the heavy leather forensic folder, sliding it slowly across the polished marble floor toward his bare feet.

Julian looked down at the leather folder, then back up at me, his throat working convulsively as he slowly bent down to pick it up.
