Chapter 5 - The Family Name Attached to the Stolen Ledger

The printed bank document lay face up on the polished mahogany desk, illuminated by the warm amber glow of the desk lamp, yet the words printed on the paper felt like jagged pieces of ice.

Julian Vance.

My younger brother.

The same Julian Vance who lived in a sprawling, multi-million-dollar beachfront estate in Malibu, who drove custom European sports cars, and who frequently complained about cash flow problems during our holiday family dinners.

The same Julian Vance whom I had bailed out of financial trouble three separate times over the last decade, writing six-figure checks out of my own pocket to keep his failing speculative ventures afloat.

"There’s a mistake," I said immediately, my voice rigid with defensive denial as I pushed the document away from me.

"That’s impossible. Julian has nothing to do with the residential estate management accounts. Harrison was the sole administrator of the Beverly Hills property budget."

"Mr. Vance, financial forensics does not deal in impossibilities; it deals in cryptographic signatures and verifiable bank trails," Sterling replied calmly, sliding a second document forward to join the first.

"Look at the digital authorization log attached to the creation of the shell company back in 2019. The IP address originates directly from the secure Wi-Fi network of Julian Vance’s Malibu residence."

I stared down at the IP address logs, the cryptographic hash keys, and the verified digital signature bearing my brother’s exact legal name.

It wasn't a clerical error. It wasn't a banking glitch.

It was an undeniable, rock-solid paper trail proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that my own flesh and blood had been quietly, systematically bleeding my estate dry for over a year and a half.

And Harrison—my polished, professional estate manager—hadn't been a rogue mastermind operating alone; he had been Julian’s inside man, planted in my house to siphon funds and cover the tracks.

"Why?" I whispered to the empty room, the question tearing its way out of my throat like a physical wound.

"Why would Julian steal from me? He knows he only had to ask. If he needed forty thousand dollars a month, I would have given it to him—or at least discussed it with him like a brother."

"People who commit systemic embezzlement rarely do so out of simple desperation, sir," Sterling noted softly, packing his tablet back into his leather portfolio.

"Often, it’s about control, resentment, or maintaining an unsustainable lifestyle funded entirely by someone else’s success."

He closed the portfolio with a sharp click. "Do you want us to hand these files directly over to the federal prosecutor’s office in the morning, Mr. Vance? We have enough evidence to issue an immediate arrest warrant for both Harrison and your brother."

I stood frozen in the center of the office, the immense wealth I had spent decades accumulating suddenly feeling like a hollow, mocking cage built entirely out of betrayal and deceit.

"Not yet, Arthur," I said, my voice heavy with a profound, exhausting sorrow.
