Chapter 12 - The Safehouse Agreement and the First Night

Faced with an impossible ultimatum between a bullet in an alleyway and indentured servitude to a powerful mafia boss, Minna chose survival. Within two hours, Dante’s men had successfully towed her rusted 1998 Honda Civic from its hidden parking spot beneath Wacker Drive—not to a municipal impound lot, but to a high-end, secure automotive restoration garage in the western suburbs where Dante promised the vehicle would receive a complete mechanical overhaul. Lou received a mysterious, highly lucrative severance envelope delivered by courier, along with a firm verbal assurance that Minna had moved out of state for family reasons, ensuring the diner owner would never face questioning or danger because of her.
Minna was assigned a luxurious guest suite on the lower level of Dante’s penthouse complex—a room with plush carpets, a queen-sized bed with Egyptian cotton sheets, and an en-suite marble bathroom that felt like a five-star hotel spa. Yet, despite the extreme luxury, she spent her first night staring at the ceiling, listening to the muffled hum of the city through triple-pane soundproof glass. The sudden shift from sleeping in a freezing car seat to living in a mob boss’s fortress felt surreal, oppressive, and terrifyingly fragile. Around 3:00 a.m., unable to sleep, she padded quietly down the long hallway in a pair of oversized silk pajamas provided by household staff, heading toward the kitchen for a glass of water. As she passed Dante’s private study, she noticed a sliver of warm light spilling out across the dark hallway floor. The heavy oak door was ajar, and Dante sat behind his mahogany desk, his good hand nursing a glass of dark amber scotch while he studied surveillance reports spread out across the surface. He looked up instantly as her bare feet brushed the floorboards, his dark eyes locking onto hers with practiced alertness. He didn't look angry; instead, a faint, weary expression crossed his rugged features, softening the harsh lines of his face.
