Chapter 6 - The Two Men in Charcoal Suits

The illusion of safety shattered precisely at 10:00 a.m. when the brass bell above Lou’s diner entrance chimed with a crisp, cheerful ring that contrasted sharply with the sudden, suffocating silence that fell over the room. Two men stepped inside, instantly altering the atmospheric pressure of the establishment. They wore charcoal three-piece suits tailored with an immaculate precision that screamed money, power, and absolute danger in a working-class neighborhood where such garments were never seen. The older man walked with measured confidence; his hair was thinning, his face was lined with hard living, and a jagged, pale scar cut vertically through his left eyebrow, giving him a permanently predatory expression. The younger man walked slightly behind him, possessing striking features and cold, empty eyes that scanned the room with professional detachment.

They didn't look at the menu, they didn't look at Lou, and they didn't look at the other terrified patrons. Their gazes locked instantly onto Minna standing frozen behind the pastry display case. Minna’s survival instincts screamed at her to turn and sprint toward the back kitchen exit, but her legs felt glued to the linoleum floor. Moreover, heavy cardboard boxes of frozen french fries partially blocked the narrow kitchen doorway, trapping her like a rat in a corner. The older man walked slowly across the checkered floor, his leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the tiles, and stopped directly in front of the counter. Without a word, he reached into his breast pocket, pulled out a small, tarnished object, and laid it gently on the laminate surface. It was her silver locket. Minna’s trembling hand instinctively rose to her bare throat, where the chain usually rested.
