Chapter 13 - Unlikely Allies in the Penthouse

“Can’t sleep?” Dante asked softly, swirling the amber liquid in his crystal glass without taking a sip. Minna hesitated in the doorway for a moment before pushing the heavy door open a fraction wider and stepping into the dimly lit study. “It’s too quiet,” she admitted honestly, leaning against a bookshelf filled with heavy leather-bound volumes. “In the car, every sound meant something—a passing siren, a shifting axle, a stray cat. Here, there’s nothing. It feels like waiting for the other shoe to drop.”
Dante nodded slowly, acknowledging her fear with a rare display of empathy. “Silvio is an ambitious animal,” Dante explained, his voice dropping into a gravelly murmur as he stared into his glass. “He’s been trying to fracture the Outfit from the inside for over a year. Cutting my brake lines was supposed to look like a tragic, accidental late-night drunk driving crash into the river—clean, untraceable, and convenient.” He looked up, meeting her gaze directly. “Instead, a starving waitress with more courage than sense ruined his masterpiece by pulling me out of the drink. That makes you a vital player in a game you never wanted to join, Minna.” She crossed her arms, feeling a strange mixture of resentment and profound curiosity. “Why didn't you tell the police about me? When they pulled you from the bank, you could have given them my name and description. It would have gotten the heat off your back.” Dante let out a low, humorless chuckle that turned into a slight wince as his cracked ribs shifted. “In my world, information is currency, and keeping your existence a secret was the best tactical move I could make. Besides,” he added, a faint, ghost of a smile touching the corner of his mouth, “you saved my life when every instinct told you to run. Dante Moretti doesn’t forget debts like that easily.” That quiet conversation in the dead of night forged an unexpected bridge between the ruthless mafia boss and the destitute runaway, shifting their dynamic from captor and captive to reluctant, dangerous allies.
