Chapter 6 - The Web Tightens Around the Bride

With only six days remaining until the wedding, the tension inside the Cole mansion reached a boiling point. The estate was swarming with florists, caterers, lighting technicians, and security personnel hired by Vanessa’s wedding planning agency—men and women whose loyalty had been quietly subverted by Nathan’s chief of security forty-eight hours prior.

Nathan had spent the last week quietly restructuring the Cole Holdings voting rights through an emergency executive board session held entirely via encrypted video conference while Vanessa believed he was resting in his suite. The board, fully briefed on the toxicology reports and the attempted assassination plot, unanimously granted Nathan absolute discretionary power to execute a sting operation under Section 12 of the corporate charter.

It was evening when Vanessa cornered me near the grand staircase. The rain was drumming heavily against the stained-glass dome overhead, casting eerie, shifting patterns across the marble floor.

“Elena,” Vanessa said, her voice dropping the honeyed sweetness she used around Nathan, replacing it with a chillingly transactional tone. She stepped into my path, blocking the stairwell.

“Yes, Ms. Hale?” I replied, keeping my eyes respectfully lowered, playing the obedient, intimidated domestic worker.

“You’ve been spending an awful lot of time near Mr. Cole’s private study lately,” Vanessa said, her manicured fingers tapping rhythmically against her clutch purse. “And your little deaf daughter... she has a bad habit of staring where she shouldn't.”

“Sophia is just a child, ma’am,” I said softly. “She doesn't understand anything.”

“Children are mirrors of their mothers,” Vanessa hissed, stepping closer until I could smell her expensive French perfume—a scent that now made my stomach turn. “I want you to keep her in the basement quarters for the next six days. No wandering the halls. No being seen near the dining room during evening cocktails. If I see her anywhere near Nathan between now and the wedding, your employment—and your residency in this country—will terminate very abruptly.”

Before I could answer, a deep, resonant voice echoed from the top of the grand staircase.

“Is there a problem here, Vanessa?”

We both looked up. Nathan was standing at the landing. He was dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, looking every bit the ruthless billionaire titan he was known to be. The drug-induced sluggishness was entirely gone, replaced by a terrifying, electric alertness that made Vanessa’s breath hitch.

Vanessa’s expression morphed instantly back into her practiced, adoring smile. She smoothed down the front of her dress and glided up the steps toward him. “Nate, darling. No problem at all. Just reminding Elena about the staff protocols for the wedding week. We want everything to be absolute perfection.”

Nathan met her halfway down the stairs, extending his hand to stroke her cheek with a gentleness that sent a shiver down my spine. “Absolute perfection,” Nathan echoed softly, his eyes locked onto hers with a dark, unfathomable intensity. “Just make sure you’re ready for what happens on day fourteen, my love. Because once that date arrives, there’s no turning back.”

Vanessa shivered—not from fear, but from greed—believing his words referred to their impending marriage and the transfer of power. She had no idea she was walking straight into the executioner's chamber.
