Chapter 8 - The Trap Springs at Midnight

Ten minutes later, the double doors of the drawing room swung open. Vanessa glided in, wearing a stunning midnight-blue silk gown, a triumphant smirk playing across her lips. She had assumed Marcus was calling her from the perimeter to confirm the offshore routing numbers.

“Marcus, darling, did you bring the—?”

Vanessa’s voice died instantly in her throat.

She stopped dead in her tracks. Her eyes swept the room, taking in the federal marshals, the State Attorney General’s investigator holding an open warrant, Marcus sitting pale and shaking in handcuffs in the corner, and finally, Nathan standing behind the desk. Nathan didn't look sick. He didn't look confused or drugged. He looked healthy, powerful, and utterly merciless.

“Looking for your offshore transfer documents, Vanessa?” Nathan asked, his voice ringing clearly across the silent room. He picked up the crimson-sealed legal binder and tossed it across the table. It slid across the polished wood and stopped right at the tip of her designer heel.

Vanessa’s composure shattered. The manicured mask of high-society grace melted away in a single second, revealing the cold, desperate criminal beneath. Her hands trembled as she reached down, her fingers clawing at the edge of the table.

“You... you drank it,” Vanessa whispered, her voice cracking in absolute disbelief. “You were supposed to be comatose by tonight. The blood tests from the clinic showed—!”

“The blood tests from your private clinic?” Nathan interrupted, stepping around the desk and walking slowly toward her. “The same clinic whose chief physician you bribed six months ago to falsify my baseline health evaluations? Did you really think I wouldn't run a parallel panel through the Mayo Clinic the moment my three-year-old daughter told me what you were putting in my glass?”

Vanessa stepped backward until her spine hit the heavy oak doors, her eyes darting toward the exits, only to find federal agents blocking every escape route. “You’re lying,” she gasped, her chest heaving. “Without my power of attorney, without the marriage certificate executed within the thirty-day window, the trust defaults to the board! You can’t prove—”

“Section 9-B of the Cole Family Trust,” Nathan recited coldly, stopping just two feet away from her. “The clause you spent three years manipulating me into signing. The one that transfers all assets to the surviving spouse if the primary executive is incapacitated within thirty days prior to matrimony. You thought you were being clever by setting the wedding date as your execution deadline, Vanessa. But what you didn't realize is that Section 9-B also contains an anti-fraud forfeiture clause drafted by my grandfather in 1984.”

Nathan paused, letting the silence crush down upon her like a lead weight.

“Any individual attempting to poison, coerce, or medically manipulate an executive to trigger the matrimonial asset transfer forfeits not only all claims to the estate, but every single asset they currently possess, leading to immediate criminal prosecution for attempted murder and corporate treason.”

Vanessa let out a strangled cry, her knees buckling beneath her. “No... no, you can't do this! I gave you years! I gave you—!”

“You gave me a masterclass in greed,” Nathan said without a shred of empathy. He turned to the federal marshals. “Take her away. Charge her with attempted murder, corporate fraud, and conspiracy to commit grand larceny.”

As the heavy steel handcuffs snapped around Vanessa’s wrists and she was dragged screaming and thrashing out of the drawing room, the nightmare that had hung over the Cole estate for months finally vanished into the night.
