Chapter 7 - The Eve of the Final Reckoning

Thirteen days had passed. It was the eve of the wedding. The Cole mansion was transformed into a glittering palace of white roses, crystal chandeliers, and silk drapery, preparing for a ceremony that the media had dubbed The Wedding of the Decade. Hundreds of high-society guests, politicians, and corporate titans were scheduled to arrive by noon tomorrow.
Down in the basement quarters, Sophia and I packed our small duffel bags. Nathan had given us strict instructions: tonight, once the final phase of the operation began, we would be moved to a secure safehouse ten miles away in the hills, guarded by his personal detail. But before we left, Sophia needed to witness the resolution. She had carried the burden of her secret warning for two weeks, watching the adults dance around a lethal threat.
“Ready?” I signed to her, kneeling beside her cot.
Sophia nodded firmly, her small hands signing MAN SAFE? with fierce determination.
“Yes,” I signed back, taking her small hands in mine. “The tall man is safe. Tonight, the bad woman falls.”
Upstairs in the master suite, Nathan stood before the full-length mirror, adjusting his silk tie. On the mahogany table beside him sat the final cup of herbal tea Vanessa had lovingly brewed for him just ten minutes ago. He hadn't touched a drop of it. Instead, the contents had been safely transferred into a sterile glass vial destined for the state prosecutor’s forensic lab first thing in the morning.
At 9:00 p.m., a sleek black town car pulled through the wrought-iron gates of the estate, bypassing the security checkpoints with an authorized digital pass. Out stepped Marcus Thorne—the disgraced former CFO—carrying a heavy leather briefcase stuffed with encrypted hard drives, corporate transfer authorizations, and offshore banking keys. He thought he was coming to collect his cut of the empire from Vanessa once Nathan’s death certificate was signed.
Instead, as Marcus slipped through the side service entrance into the private drawing room, he didn't find Vanessa waiting alone.
He found Nathan sitting behind the massive oak desk, flanked by two armed federal marshals and the lead investigator of the State Attorney General’s Economic Crimes Division.

Marcus froze, his hand flying toward his breast pocket where a burner phone rested. “Mr. Cole... I—I can explain—”
“Save your breath for the grand jury, Marcus,” Nathan said, his voice cold as arctic ice. “You’re about thirty minutes early for your own execution, but please, come in and make yourself comfortable. Your partner should be joining us any second now.”
