Chapter 10 - The Ghost of Vince Rossi

Emma moved into the estate full-time.
Not as a maid, but as my guest.
My men were shocked. Luke just smiled.
"About time you rejoined the living," Luke told me.
But the living still had enemies.
Vince Rossi wasn't happy that his hit squad had failed.
He was even less happy that I had paid off Emma's debt, effectively making a fool of his loan sharks.
He requested a sit-down.
Neutral ground. An old warehouse by the docks.
"It's a trap," Emma pleaded the night before the meeting.
We were sitting in the library. A fire was roaring in the fireplace.
"I know it is," I said calmly.
"Then why go? You have enough money. You have enough power. Walk away."
She knelt beside my wheelchair, resting her hands on my knees.
I looked down at her.
"In my world, you don't walk away. You eliminate the threat. If I don't finish Rossi, he will keep coming. He will target my men. He will target you."
"I don't care! I'd rather be poor and running than watch you get killed!"
I reached out and brushed a stray lock of hair behind her ear.
"I didn't survive a sniper's bullet to be taken out by a two-bit thug like Vince Rossi."
"Promise me you'll come back," she whispered.
"I promise."
For the first time, I leaned down and pressed my lips against hers.
May you like
It was soft, desperate, and tasted like salt and fear.
It was everything I had been missing for two years.
