Chapter 4 - Digging Into The Dirt

The next morning, I summoned Luke to my office.
"I want everything on the new maid," I told him.
Luke raised an eyebrow. "Emma? Did she steal something?"
"No. Just find out why she's working herself into the grave."
By noon, the file was on my desk.
It was worse than I thought.
Emma's father had walked out on them when she was ten.
Her mother, Sarah, had early-onset Alzheimer's.
The medical bills were astronomical.
Emma had taken out predatory loans from street sharks just to keep her mother in a low-end memory care facility.
And the sharks she owed money to?
They were affiliated with the Rossi family.
My direct rivals in the Chicago underground.
"She owes thirty grand to Vince Rossi's crew," Luke said, leaning against the doorframe.
"They've been harassing her. Calling her workplace, waiting outside her apartment."
I stared at the photo in the file.
Emma smiling, years ago, before the exhaustion took over.
A strange feeling settled in my chest. Protective. Violent.
"Vince Rossi is a dog," I muttered.
"We have a truce with the Rossis, Danny," Luke warned. "Don't start a war over a maid."
May you like
"I'm not starting a war," I said, spinning my wheelchair toward the window.
"I'm just closing a debt."
