Chapter 6 - Breach Of The Fortress

Two weeks of strange, quiet peace followed.

Emma continued cleaning, but she started bringing me coffee in the mornings, lingering to talk.

She told me about her mother.

I told her about Chicago before the wheelchair.

I was letting my guard down.

In my world, that is a fatal mistake.

It happened on a Friday night, during a torrential downpour.

The alarms didn't go off.

The security cameras went blind.

Luke burst into my study, an AR-15 in his hands.

"We're breached! South wing! Rossi's men."

"How did they get through the gate?" I roared, pulling my own Glock from the desk drawer.

"Someone on the inside gave them the codes."

Gunfire erupted down the hallway.

The sound echoed through the massive estate.

"Where is Emma?" I demanded.

"She was in the kitchen," Luke shouted over the noise.

The kitchen was in the south wing.

My blood ran cold. Colder than the paralyzed legs I couldn't feel.

"Get me to the safe room," I told Luke. "But we go through the kitchen first."

"Danny, no! We have to secure you—"

May you like

"I said we go through the kitchen!"

I wheeled myself forward, weapon raised, the phantom pain completely forgotten in the face of sheer adrenaline.
