Chapter 2 - The Unraveling Threads

The apartment above the laundromat smelled endlessly of cheap lavender detergent and ozone, but to me, it felt like a war room.

I sat at a makeshift desk, illuminated only by the blue light of two high-performance laptops I had managed to buy using cash from my private emergency safe-deposit box. For seven years, Daniel had convinced himself that I was nothing more than an obedient accessory. He had forgotten that every piece of security infrastructure, every encryption protocol, and every risk-assessment matrix running through Pierce Global Technologies was born inside my head.

My first task was opening the envelope from Genex Laboratories.

Inside was the certified DNA analysis report. I scanned the genetic markers, reading through the complex allele matching data with trained, scientific precision.

The probability of Daniel Pierce being the father was 99.99%.

I let out a slow, steady breath as a bitter smile crept onto my face. I had never been unfaithful. Daniel knew that. He had always known it. The entire paternity scandal was a calculated, vicious setup designed to destroy my public credibility, force me into an expedited divorce, and void my marital rights before the company went public next month.

If I was branded an adulteress, the public would cheer when he cast me out with nothing.

I pulled up the system access logs for Pierce Global’s corporate intranet. Because Daniel’s IT team had rushed to revoke my standard employee access, they had relied on a basic account termination script. But they didn't know about the hardcoded diagnostic backdoor I had built into the original core architecture seven years ago—a ghost protocol designed to monitor data corruption.

I breached the company’s internal servers in less than four minutes.

What I found buried inside the encrypted executive directories was far more sickening than a simple marital betrayal.

For the past eighteen months, Daniel and Vanessa Hale had not just been carrying on a clandestine affair—they had been systematically siphoning off millions of dollars from the company’s primary research and development fund. They were offshoring the capital to a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands under the name Vane-Pierce Holdings.

To cover the missing funds, Daniel had altered the risk-analysis algorithms—my algorithms—to inflate the company’s projected revenue reports for the upcoming Wall Street IPO.

He wasn't just trying to get rid of me because he was tired of his wife. He was framing me for infidelity because the IPO was two weeks away, and as a founding shareholder, my signature was required for the final financial audit.

If I audited the books as a legitimate board member, I would instantly catch the multi-million-dollar discrepancy.

Therefore, I had to be discredited, disgraced, and cast out before I could look at the real numbers.

I leaned back in my chair, the soft hum of the washing machines below vibrating through the floorboards.

“You wanted a scandal, Daniel?” I whispered to the empty room, my eyes reflecting the lines of code scrolling down my screen. “I’ll give you an apocalypse.”

I spent the rest of the night mapping out their financial network, tracing every offshore transaction, every forged signature, and every secret trip Daniel and Vanessa had taken under the guise of “corporate retreats.”

By 4:00 a.m., I had compiled a master dossier containing financial forensic proof of offshore fraud, insider trading, and corporate embezzlement totaling over forty million dollars.

And then, my eye caught a recent high-definition social media post from Vanessa Hale’s public profile.

She had posted a picture of herself sipping champagne at a luxury restaurant, holding a glass with her left hand. Sparkling on her slender wrist was a distinctive, vintage diamond-and-emerald bracelet—an heirloom that had belonged to my late grandmother, which Daniel had claimed was “lost in transit” when we moved houses last year.

She wasn't just taking my husband and my company shares. She was wearing my dead grandmother's memories on national television.

A cold, calm clarity washed over me. The pain was completely gone, replaced by a sharp, terrifying focus.

It was time to send my RSVP to their victory party.
