Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Empire

I walked into the ballroom alone.

I was not wearing the meek, muted clothes Daniel used to pick out for me. I wore a stunning, floor-length midnight-blue gown, my hair styled in sharp, elegant waves, and my head held impossibly high.

Behind me walked four uniformed officers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, accompanied by representatives from the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The crowd parted down the middle, creating a wide aisle for me as I walked slowly, deliberately toward the stage. Every camera lens swung away from Daniel and focused entirely on me.

I stopped at the foot of the stage, looking up at the man I had spent seven years loving, protecting, and building an empire for.

“Hello, Daniel,” I said softly, my voice amplified by the quiet room.

“Claire...” he stammered, trembling, his hands shaking so violently he had to grip the podium to stay upright. “Claire, please... we can talk about this in private—”

“You didn't want privacy when you called a press conference to brand me an unfaithful wife,” I said, taking another step up the stairs. “You didn't want privacy when your lawyer tried to strip me of my life’s work while I was carrying your child.”

I turned toward the head table where Vanessa Hale sat frozen.

I walked up to her, reached down, and unclasped my grandmother’s diamond-and-emerald bracelet from her wrist. She was shaking so hard she couldn't even pull her hand away.

“This belongs to a real family,” I whispered to her. “Not a thief.”

The lead FBI agent stepped onto the stage, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs.

“Daniel Pierce,” the agent announced loudly, his voice echoing off the walls. “You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, securities fraud, corporate embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit grand larceny.”

Another pair of agents walked straight to Vanessa Hale.

“Vanessa Hale, you are under arrest as an co-conspirator.”

The ballroom erupted into absolute chaos. Reporters rushed forward, flashbulbs exploding like a thousand dying stars. Photographers captured every second of Daniel Pierce being pressed against the stage podium, his wrists bound in steel, his million-dollar smile replaced by a look of helpless, pathetic horror.

Eleanor Pierce slumped into her chair, clutching her chest, screaming in fury as her son was paraded past his elite peers in handcuffs.

As Daniel was led past me, he stopped for a fraction of a second, his eyes filled with tears, desperate and pleading.

“Claire... please,” he sobbed, his voice broken. “I made a mistake. I love you. Think of our baby... we can fix this!”

I looked into the eyes of the man who had tried to destroy my life, my name, and my sanity without a second thought.

May you like

I leaned in close and whispered in his ear.

“I am thinking of our baby, Daniel. That’s why I’m taking everything you have.”
