Chapter 4 - The Gala of Truth

The grand ballroom of the St. Regis Hotel was a shimmering sea of tuxedoes, silk gowns, and crystal chandeliers.

Over three hundred of the city's most powerful elites sat at circular tables covered in white linens, sipping expensive vintage champagne.

At the head table sat Daniel Pierce, looking dashing in a bespoke black tuxedo, playing the role of the tragic, brave bachelor. Beside him, dressed in a breathtaking scarlet dress, was Vanessa Hale. And around her wrist, catching the glow of the chandeliers, was my grandmother's emerald bracelet.

Eleanor Pierce took the stage first, adjusting her glasses and smiling warmly at the crowd.

“Thank you all for coming tonight,” Eleanor said into the microphone, her voice dripping with calculated sweetness. “As many of you know, our family has recently endured a deeply painful personal betrayal. But my son, Daniel, has shown true strength of character. He remains committed to integrity, family, and truth.”

The crowd applauded politely. Daniel bowed his head with practiced modesty.

“And now,” Eleanor continued, “I present the CEO of Pierce Global, Daniel Pierce!”

Daniel stood up, adjusting his cuffs, and walked toward the stage amidst thunderous applause. He stepped up to the podium, placing his hands on the sides.

“Thank you, Mother. Thank you, friends,” Daniel began, leaning into the microphone with a practiced, somber expression. “Truth is a rare commodity these days. When those we trust deceive us, we must stand firm on principles—”

Suddenly, the massive 4K projection screens behind him flickered violently.

The ambient light in the ballroom shifted from warm gold to a stark, cold blue. The light background music cut out completely, replaced by a loud, sudden static chirp over the speaker system.

Daniel froze, turning around in confusion. “What’s going on with the AV system?”

The screen cleared, displaying a high-definition image of the certified paternity report from Genex Laboratories.

In bold, bright red letters at the top, highlighted for everyone in the room to read clearly:

PATERNITY CONFIRMED: DANIEL PIERCE (99.99%) SUBJECT: CLAIRE MERCER-PIERCE (PREGNANT - 8 WEEKS)

A collective gasp swept through the ballroom like a sudden gust of wind. Whispers erupted across every single table.

Daniel’s face drained of all color instantly. He stumbled back a step from the podium. “Turn that off! Shut it down right now!” he screamed at the AV booth.

The technicians frantically pressed buttons, but my hardcoded lock prevented them from overriding the feed.

The screen flickered again.

This time, a high-definition video began playing. It was security footage from three weeks ago, taken inside Daniel’s private executive suite at Pierce Global. The audio was crystal clear.

“Are you sure Claire won't suspect anything about the offshore accounts?” Daniel’s recorded voice echoed through the high-ceilinged ballroom.

On the giant screen, Vanessa Hale appeared, sitting on Daniel’s lap, wearing the exact same emerald bracelet she was wearing right now in the room.

“She’s an idiot, Daniel,” Vanessa’s recorded voice replied smoothly as she kissed his cheek. “She thinks you’re late at the office working on software. Once we leak the fake affair story, her reputation will be trash. She’ll sign whatever divorce settlement we shove in her face just to escape the harassment. She’ll lose her shares, and we take the entire IPO payout.”

The ballroom went completely, utterly silent. You could hear a pin drop on the thick carpet.

Every single eye in the room slowly turned from the screen to Vanessa Hale, who sat frozen at the head table, her face as white as a sheet, her mouth hanging open in sheer terror.

Daniel stood on stage, sweating profusely, his chest heaving as he stared into the flashing lights of the media cameras that were broadcasting the event live.

“It’s a fake! It’s a deepfake!” Daniel yelled frantically into the microphone, his voice cracking with desperation. “My ex-wife is crazy! She’s hacking the system!”

Then, the heavy oak doors at the back of the ballroom swung open with a dramatic thud.
